Serj Tankian mocks would-be martyrs and jihadists waging war in the name of religion on “Your Mom,” a track off his recent Elasticity EP. He plays up the song’s cartoonish side in a new lyric video. In between animations of soldiers carrying guns and karate-kicking moms, Tankian rolls his eyes dramatically and raises his eyebrows as he sings about “radical greed” and “despicable fools.” At the end of the clip, he laughs at the idea that jihadists believe they’ll be given 72 virgins after they die. Despite the heavy subject matter, Tankian’s sarcasm and animator D.S. Bradford’s tongue-in-cheek visuals make the tune feel lighthearted. “As I listened to the beginning of the song, with the more mellow acoustic guitar, I envisioned a brave bird flying over a countryside, unaware of the danger waiting in the ashen, war-torn lands ahead,” Bradford said in a statement. “This didn’t stop the bird from gliding into danger and took the form of ‘Your Mom.’ As the fighters continue their … [Read more...] about See Serj Tankian Compare Holy Wars to ‘Your Mom’ in New Lyric Video

Inside NFL’s Backwards Marijuana Policy
At the conclusion of North Dallas Forty wide receiver Phil Elliott, played by Nick Nolte, gets blackballed by his team owner for “smoking a marijuana cigarette.” After being presented with a photo that shows Elliott toking up, the team owner patronizes Elliott and says, “Illegal drugs are forbidden by the league rules Phil, you know that.” To which Elliott replies: “Jesus, smoking grass, what are you kidding me? If you nailed all the ballplayers who smoked grass, you wouldn’t even be able to field a punt return team. Besides that, you give me the hardest stuff in Chicago just to get out of the goddamn locker room. Hard drugs!” Though North Dallas Forty is technically fictional and came out nearly 40 years ago, its story is a classic example of the same-shit-different-day phenomenon. In recent weeks, Bills linemen Marcell Dareus and Seantrel Henderson were each suspended four games for using marijuana. And Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott caused a scandal by simply … [Read more...] about Inside NFL’s Backwards Marijuana Policy

Tribeca To Kick Off With Indoor-Outdoor World Premiere Of ‘In The Heights’
The 20th edition of the Tribeca Film Festival, taking advantage of its timing as the city and film business emerges from the pandemic, will open June 9 with the world premiere of In the Heights . Warner Bros ’ adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda ’s Tony Award-winning musical, which is directed by Jon Chu, will screen outside at various sites simultaneously, and indoors at the United Palace. The restored 1930 theater is in the Upper Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights, the setting for the film and also Miranda’s longtime home base. There will also be outdoor screenings on opening night across all five of New York’s boroughs, a first for Tribeca, though the fest has long explored many parts of the city. In 2019, the fest opened with a documentary about Harlem’s Apollo Theater held at the Apollo itself. After shifting its usual April start back to June, the fest will be the first major one in North America since the onset of Covid-19 to have in-person screenings, though … [Read more...] about Tribeca To Kick Off With Indoor-Outdoor World Premiere Of ‘In The Heights’
Amigo the Devil on How Tom Waits, Serial Killers and Bingo All Figure Into His New Album
Last month, Danny Kiranos had enough of being stuck at home. The lack of movement during the pandemic over the last year was weighing on the singer-songwriter, who performs under the moniker Amigo the Devil. “I got cabin fever so I packed a bag, put some stuff in the car and I’ve literally been driving,” Kiranos says. “I started going north, I didn’t have much of a plan.” He headed out from his home base in Austin, Texas, drove through Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana, making a pit stop at Yellowstone along the way. Things got a little too chilly, so he came down to Florida where he was raised and picked up a friend to join the ride. He was still on the road a week before his new album Born Against was set be released.
