Bassist Doug Wimbish on Nearly Joining the Stones and Madonna’s Insane ‘Erotica’ Party
Rolling Stone interview series Unknown Legends features long-form conversations between senior writer Andy Greene and veteran musicians who have toured and recorded alongside icons for years, if not decades. All are renowned in the business, but some are less well known to the general public. Here, these artists tell their complete stories, giving an up-close look at life on music’s A list. This edition features bassist Doug Wimbish. As the in-house bassist for Sugar Hill Records, Doug Wimbish played on songs that make up the foundation of hip-hop as we know it today, including Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five ’s “The Message” and “White Lines,” and the Sugarhill Gang ’s “Apache” and “8th Wonder.” “We cut all of that Sugar Hill music from scratch,” Sugarhill Gang rapper Master Gee told the crowd on the 80s Cruise earlier this year before bringing Wimbish onto the stage. “There were no samples. That was all done by real musicians like Doug Wimbish. I’m here today … [Read more...] about Bassist Doug Wimbish on Nearly Joining the Stones and Madonna’s Insane ‘Erotica’ Party
Hot Spots: How Manchester Is Fast Becoming A Magnet For International Productions
As the UK production boom shows no sign of letting up and capacity and crew shortages in and around London continue to trouble producers, Manchester is fast becoming an attractive destination for international film and television crews. The city is, as the crow flies, just 163 miles north of the English capital and its high-end 85,000 square foot Space Studios Manchester , a mere five minutes from the city center, has housed prolific productions ranging from Sony/Marvel’s Jared Leto starrer Morbius to Netflix’s Anatomy Of A Scandal to multiple seasons of BBC gangster drama Peaky Blinders . While the city has a long history of hosting local films like 28 Days Later or East Is East as well as lauded British television shows ranging from Queer As Folk to Shameless and the iconic longstanding soap Coronation Street , the last few years have seen the city really ramp up its efforts to position itself as a global filming destination. “What we want to do … [Read more...] about Hot Spots: How Manchester Is Fast Becoming A Magnet For International Productions
Pranks, Paranoia and Peter Pan: John Lee on Making ‘False Positive’
This piece originally appeared as part of Rolling Stone ’s annual Hot List, in the July/August issue of the magazine. When John Lee was working at his first job — a magic store in the small Bay Area town of Castroville, California — there was a trick he’d always play. “It’s a classic move called the French Drop,” the 49-year-old filmmaker says, as he angles his laptop’s camera downward. He picks up a quarter, slides it into his other hand, and closes his palm; when he opens his fist, there’s no coin there. “‘Oh, look, it stayed in this hand, haha!’” The teenage Lee wouldn’t perform the gag for regular customers, however; he’d wait until professional magicians came into the shop and then do the antiquated Magic 101 move. The older men would wearily sigh, roll their eyes, and gesture toward the first hand… at which point Lee would open his fist and present their coins. “I loved it, because they would just seethe, ” he says, cracking up at the memory. “They thought they caught … [Read more...] about Pranks, Paranoia and Peter Pan: John Lee on Making ‘False Positive’
Pierre Kwenders’ Multitudinous Self: ‘Where There Is Life, There Is Hope’
“There’s a saying in the Ivory Coast,” says Pierre Kwenders as he slides from English to French. “ Tant qu’il y a de la vie, il y a de l’espoir. ‘Where there is life there is hope.’ Hope keeps us alive. We need to dream, dream for a better world. We need to be mature enough to learn from our mistakes and keep trying to be better.” With that forward-looking gaze, the 36-year-old singer, songwriter, DJ, actor, and style-setter simultaneously shrinks the world and expands it. With his new album, José Luis and the Paradox of Love, Kwenders connects collaborators from musical hotspots as far-flung as Kinshasa, Paris, Lisbon, Santiago de Chile, Brooklyn, New Orleans, and Seattle. His songs fuse African musical styles from across decades and countries with of-the-moment R&B sensualism, smooth-jazz ambiance, and dancefloor-directed groove. His lyrics, sung in five different languages, expose his fears and flaws while celebrating his multifaceted humanity. It’s a fluid, … [Read more...] about Pierre Kwenders’ Multitudinous Self: ‘Where There Is Life, There Is Hope’

Senate Passes Landmark Bipartisan Gun Bill, the Most Expansive Firearms Legislation in Decades
The Senate voted Thursday to approve a bipartisan bill aimed at curtailing gun violence in the United States, marking the country’s first major legislative action on firearms in nearly three decades. The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act aims to implement “enhanced” background checks on gun buyers between the ages of 18 to 21, funnel money to community mental health and safety programs, and further prohibit individuals convicted of domestic violence from purchasing guns. It also will encourage states to strengthen so-called “red flag” laws that allow authorities to seize firearms from individuals deemed a danger to themselves or others. According to the Associated Press , 19 states and the District of Columbia already have red flag laws in place . The House will vote on the $13 billion package Friday, which coincidentally falls on the one month anniversary of the mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas that left 19 children and two teachers dead. … [Read more...] about Senate Passes Landmark Bipartisan Gun Bill, the Most Expansive Firearms Legislation in Decades
Influencers Blame Hospital Stays, Gallbladder Removal on ‘Daily Harvest’ Lentil Product
As vegan lifestyle influencer Luke Pearson tells it, on June 6, he was packing to leave his home in Portland, Oregon, for a trip to Mexico, when he reached for Daily Harvest’s frozen French Lentil and Leek Crumbles to cook up a nutritious late-night snack. The product, which he’d gotten in a PR package the company sent out to influencers , comprises lentils, butternut squash, hemp seeds, quinoa, and other ostensibly healthy ingredients, bound into clusters. That night was actually the second time he made it, he says. The first time, about a week earlier, he’d taken some video footage — which he shared with Rolling Stone — of himself topping a flatbread with the Daily Harvest crumbles. The packaging was visible on the table beside him. He had planned to post the video on social media , but says things took a turn before he uploaded the content. About 20 minutes after eating, he says he felt “excruciating, all-over stomach pain.” He slept it off and never suspected the … [Read more...] about Influencers Blame Hospital Stays, Gallbladder Removal on ‘Daily Harvest’ Lentil Product
Networks Plan Special Coverage Following Supreme Court’s Abortion Ruling
Broadcast networks broke into regular programming to cover the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe V. Wade, while cable networks have been virtually non-stop in providing reaction. That will continue this evening. Rachel Maddow will host her MSNBC show, breaking from her regular schedule. Norah O’Donnell will anchor CBS Evening News from the Supreme Court. At 8 PM, PBS will feature The End of Roe: A PBS NewsHour Special Report , with Judy Woodruff looking at the legal and cultural impact. Washington Week , hosted by Yamiche Alcindor, will focus entirely on the Roe decision and feature the Politico reporter who broke the leaked draft opinion. That leaked opinion gave networks extra time to prepare for a momentous ruling. MSNBC, which ran commercial free for four hours after the decision, had reporters in Jackson, MS and St. Louis, MO, capturing the scene outside abortion clinics in two states that have so-called “trigger laws,” where abortion laws immediately … [Read more...] about Networks Plan Special Coverage Following Supreme Court’s Abortion Ruling
How an NHL Enforcer Broke His Body — and Turned to Psychedelics to Heal His Brain
Riley Cote ’s journey to enlightenment began in earnest when a hulking man punched him in the face. Cote, now 40 and retired from professional hockey, remembers the moment with a dark laugh. He’d gotten into this particular bust-up one night during the 2009 season with one of the NHL ’s most vicious fighters, and took the worst of it, waking the next day with his left eye blackened shut. “What,” he asked himself, “am I doing?” He drove to the Philadelphia Flyers training facility and got into the shower. Feeling congested, he reached for a tissue. He didn’t realize he’d suffered a cracked sinus, so what happened next was physics. When he blew his nose, the air — rather than coming out of his nostrils — inflated his face. The pressure surged instantly behind his good eye and closed it tight. Team trainer Derek Settlemyre heard Cote scream. “His whole face had swollen up,” Settlemyre recalls. “We tell them, if they think they have a fracture, ‘Don’t blow your nose’ — and he … [Read more...] about How an NHL Enforcer Broke His Body — and Turned to Psychedelics to Heal His Brain
