Despite, or perhaps before the local blackout on media reporting, communist party mouthpiece The Global Times published an op-ed titled “Attack on Mulan tragedy for American society” and called the backlash over Xinjiang “another manifestation of the extreme ideologies regarding China among U.S. public opinion.” It added, “The truth-seeking spirit of American public opinion has short-circuited on Xinjiang-related issues and the understanding of China. As a socialist country, China attaches great importance to people’s livelihood and has been providing preferential treatment to ethnic minorities for a long time. How can the country possibly carry out the so-called vicious crackdown on a specific ethnic group as Washington portrays?… Now, even a film company has to experience scrutiny, thanks to the above-mentioned labeling… This is depravity.” … [Read more...] about ‘Mulan’ Now Eyeing China Bow In $20M-$25M Range After Soft Saturday – International Box Office

Now putting Tenet‘s box office figures in the proper context, which is something Warner Bros. wants the press to do, Tenet‘s opening weekend figures (which I gave you above) are very much in line with those resulting from a digital campaign. There was some TV spend on Tenet during NBA games (not so much cable), but largely, the pic’s opening weekend had a digital/online campaign. iSpot TV spot spend estimates support this. Before this weekend, Warners spent $8.5M in TV spots on Tenet, versus Disney’s overall $35M spend on Mulan ($14M of that coming from its latter PVOD push). WarnerMedia Studios & Networks Boss Ann Sarnoff told us that the P&A spend on Tenet wouldn’t be front-loaded, rather spread out, as the pic will be the marquee feature in cinemas for the next 11 weeks (really, until Disney/Marvel’s Black Widow arrives on Nov. 6). So perhaps as the studio spends more in TV, we’ll see an incremental difference … [Read more...] about Warner Bros & Sony Hiding Box Office Numbers From Rival Studios On ‘Tenet’ & ‘Broken Hearts Gallery’: Here’s Why
