LONDON — French conductor Pierre Boulez once expressed a wish to blow up opera houses. Pete Townshend obviously prefers infiltration. On January 16th, the Who start their first tour of Europe in four years. A grand tour. They open in Paris at the Theatre Champs Elysees, the first pop group ever to play that establishment. From there it’s the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen and on to Germany and the Cologne Opera House, the Hamburg Opera House and Berlin’s German Opera House. On December 14th the Who brought their British tour to an end with a performance of Tommy at the London Coliseum opera house. Except for the royal box, all 2,500 seats were filled. In Germany, says Who factotum Peter Rudge, the group is scheduled to have “a cup of tea and a doughnut with President Heinemann and then they’re going to lay some bread on him for the Save The Children Fund.” In turn, President Heinemann will attend the Who’s performance in Cologne. This strangest of awards season gets official tonight with the presenting of the 78th annual Golden Globes Awards , and Deadline will be updating the winners list live as trophies are handed out in 25 categories — 14 for motion pictures and 11 for TV. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are back to host the virtual event, with Fey at the Rainbow Room in New York and Poehler at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles — the first time the event has gone bicoastal . The Who will rerelease their classic 1967 album The Who Sell Out as a giant reissue complete with studio outtakes, unreleased tracks, early takes, and Pete Townshend’s original demos for the LP. The Super Deluxe edition of The Who Sell Out , due out April 23rd via UMe/Polydor, boasts 112 songs across five CDs and two 7-inch singles, including 46 unreleased tracks. The Who Sell Out placed at Number 316 on Rolling Stone ’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list . “The Who’s third record was their first concept album, a tribute to the U.K.’s offshore pirate-radio stations. The band strung the songs together with mock commercials (‘Heinz Baked Beans’) and genuine radio jingles,” we wrote of the LP. “It’s the Who’s funniest record — the sad love ballad ‘Odorono’ turns out to be an ad for deodorant.
