Ex-Minneapolis Cop Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter in George Floyd’s Death
Thomas Lane, the former Minneapolis cop who held down George Floyd ’s legs while he was murdered by Derek Chauvin , has pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced the plea deal with Lane on Wednesday, May 18. As part of the deal, prosecutors have dismissed the second-degree unintentional murder charge that Lane was also facing in relation to Floyd’s death. Lane will be sentenced at a later date, but Ellison’s office and Lane’s defense attorney have recommended a sentence of just 36 months. Prosecutors also agreed that Lane will be allowed to serve his state sentence at a federal institution concurrently with the sentence he receives after being found guilty of violating Floyd’s civil rights earlier this year (Lane still hasn’t been sentenced in that case). “Today, my thoughts are once again with the victims, George Floyd and his family,” Ellison said in a statement. “Nothing will bring Floyd back. He should … [Read more...] about Ex-Minneapolis Cop Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter in George Floyd’s Death
Fox Breaks With Tradition & Does Not Announce Fall Schedule On Day Of Upfront, Unveils 2022-23 Slate
Fox this morning announced the bulk of its programming slate for the 2022-23 but not a fall schedule. As Deadline reported two weeks ago, the network had been planning not to unveil a grid in conjunction with its May 16 upfront presentation. As broadcast networks have become a small part of media congloms’ portfolio pitch to advertisers, the fall schedules are no longer a centerpiece of their presentations and are sometimes omitted from the corporate upfronts altogether. But the broadcast networks still traditionally unveil their fall schedule the morning of their upfront presentation. Fox will announce its fall 2022-23 lineup to advertisers and the media soon, the network confirmed during an upfront press call Monday morning. The decision was made long before Fox could not close renewal deals for its top scripted series 9-1-1 and fellow drama stalwart The Resident in time for its upfront, which would’ve created gaping holes on the fall grid. Both renewals are … [Read more...] about Fox Breaks With Tradition & Does Not Announce Fall Schedule On Day Of Upfront, Unveils 2022-23 Slate
ISIS Claim Responsibility for Terror Attacks in Paris
The Islamic State (ISIS) have claimed responsibility for the multiple attacks on Paris Friday that killed 127 people, including 118 at an Eagles of Death Metal concert . The terror group took credit for the attacks in an online statement, French President Francois Hollande told citizens Saturday. “Eight brothers carrying explosive belts and guns targeted areas in the heart of the French capital that were specifically chosen in advance: the Stade de France during a match against Germany which that imbecile Francois Hollande was attending; the Bataclan where hundreds of idolaters were together in a party of perversity as well as other targets in the 10th, 11th and 18th arrondissement,” the group said, according to Metro . “France and those who follow its path must know that they remain the principle targets of the Islamic State. This attack is just the start of a storm and a warning for those who wish to draw lessons.” “It is an act of war that was committed by a terrorist … [Read more...] about ISIS Claim Responsibility for Terror Attacks in Paris
Sid Vicious Accused of Murder
Former Sex Pistol Sid Vicious was arrested on October 12th at the Chelsea Hotel and charged with the fatal stabbing of his girlfriend of almost two years, Nancy Spungen. Spungen, like Vicious (real name John Simon Ritchie) a heroin addict, is thought to have died between the hours of five and nine on the morning Sid was arrested. Her body was found in the bathroom of the couple’s first-floor hotel room in a pool of blood. Dr. Geetha Natarajan, associate medical examiner for Manhattan, said the cause of death was internal hemorrhaging due to a single knife wound to the lower abdomen. Vicious’ personal friends in the punk community immediately suspected that Spungen’s death was part of a botched double suicide. “They were both really depressed and talked about dying the last few weeks,” said a woman who had become friendly with them at the Chelsea. Another friend said the couple had a long-standing agreement that if one died, the other would follow. Then, a week after his release … [Read more...] about Sid Vicious Accused of Murder
Jerry Lee Lewis, Keith Whitley Lead Country Music Hall of Fame’s 2022 Inductees
The Country Music Hall of Fame has announced a new group of inductees for 2022. Rock & roll pioneer Jerry Lee Lewis will be inducted in the Veteran category, neotraditionalist Keith Whitley will join the Hall in the Modern category, and former RCA Records executive will become a member in the Nonperforming category. Brooks & Dunn handled the announcements in the Hall of Fame’s rotunda, marking the first time in two years that they’d been able to gather in person for the new Hall of Fame class. It was also an occasion that was still heavy with the recent death of 2021 Hall of Fame inductee Naomi Judd for her work in the Judds. Louisiana native Jerry Lee Lewis initially made his impact in rockabilly and rock & roll, cutting the iconic Fifties singles like “Great Balls of Fire” and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” for Sun Records in Memphis and wowing audiences with his boogie-woogie piano and flamboyant, high-octane performances. In the Sixties, he shifted to country … [Read more...] about Jerry Lee Lewis, Keith Whitley Lead Country Music Hall of Fame’s 2022 Inductees
