EXCLUSIVE : Wattpad Webtoon Studios has made a number of hires including a global head of television and launched an animation division. It comes after the company, which was formed by a merger of social storytelling platform Wattpad and digital comic platform Webtoon, hired David Madden as head of global entertainment. Sera Tabb has joined as Head of Global Television. Tabb was previously SVP, Development at Picture Perfect Federation and has worked on projets such as Oscar-winner Coda . She has also previously worked at Global Road, Skydance Media, Sony Pictures Television and UTA. She will oversee all aspects of development across the studio’s growing slate of series adaptations from Webtoon’s global IP catalog and Wattpad webnovels. Jeremy Paxman is to step down from stalwart BBC quiz show University Challenge after almost three decades. The former Newsnight presenter will film his last episode this Autumn and his final series will air from August to next Summer. He said he’d “had a blast hosting this wonderful series for nearly 29 years” and had “been lucky enough to work with an amazing team and to meet some of the swottier brains in the country.” “It gives me hope for the future,” added Paxman. Paxman led a revived BBC Two Newsnight from 1994 after it was axed by ITV in 1987 following a 25-year run helmed by Bamber Gascoigne. Downtown Los Angeles is going through a transformation and East End Capital is planning on building 16 soundstages in the Arts District. The 720-square-foot development would be close to the infamous 6th Street Bridge. East End Studios filed plans with the city to develop 15 acres of land at 6th and Alameda streets, according to Commercial Observer . The space would not only house 321,530 square feet of studio facilities, but it would include 293,320 square feet of office space, 106,570 square feet of production support, and 1,327 parking spots. “The existing and proposed amenities in the area, the sheer size of the property, and the billions of dollars of nearby transit investment represented an unmatched opportunity to bring desperately needed modern production space to Los Angeles,” Shep Wainwright, managing partner of East End Studios, said in a statement. British YouTube star Joe Sugg is launching a production company backed by BBC Studios to develop entertainment and factual entertainment formats. Final Straw Productions will  make shows for people of all ages and has already struck a develop, production and distribution deal with the BBC’s commercial arm, which has worked with Sugg in the past. As part of the deal, Sugg will be joined by BBC Studios ’ Top Gear and Celebrity Big Painting Challenge exec Sacha Grimsditch, who becomes Development Executive and will help Sugg set up the firm. Sugg already runs a talent agency, Margravine Talent Agency. He is a British YouTube sensation, with 7.5M followers and a major presence on Instagram and TikTok. Amazon relationships format Modern Love is taking that loving feeling into the Netherlands. A Dutch adaptation will premiere on Prime Video globally this winter. The scripted anthology format, which is based on a popular column from The New York Times, began in the U.S. on Prime Video in 2019 before three Indian language versions and a Japanese remake were announced. The Dutch version, Modern Love Amsterdam , is the first in Europe. Several high-profile Dutch directors and writers have collaborated on the series’ episodes, all off which take place in Amsterdam, in locations such as the city’s iconic train station to Amsterdam-Noord and Zuidoost.
