EXCLUSIVE: Showtime ’s forthcoming American Rust has added Mark Pellegrino ( Dexter ) as a series regular. He joins Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney in the drama series which is scheduled to begin production in Pittsburgh in late March. Based on Philipp Meyer’s celebrated debut novel of the same name, the family drama explores the tattered American dream through the eyes of a complicated and compromised chief of police Del Harris (Daniels) in a Rust Belt town in southwest Pennsylvania. When the woman he truly loves sees her son accused of murder, Harris is forced to decide what he’s willing to do to protect him. Pellegrino will step into the role of Virgil Poe who is described as “wiry” and “hanging onto his good looks” — and he’s also unemployed. Quality Control Music’s ‘Control the Streets Vol. 2’ Could’ve Used a Little More Quality Control
What’s the point of a label compilation? Ideally, it’s a showcase that communicates depth and shines a light on the lesser-known artists on a roster by placing them on the same stage as the label’s stars. Control the Streets Vol. 2 , the new compilation from Atlanta trap incubator Quality Control Music, features DAYYTONA FOX, YRN Murk, Migo Domingo, and the rest of QC’s dozen-odd prospects, but makes the listener wade to the second half of the 36-song compilation to hear any of them. Vol. 2 ultimately sags under the weight of its excessive length and uninspired performances from Migos and Lil Yachty, the QC lynchpins who carried the weight of the label’s first, much stronger Control the Streets installment in 2017. How Amy Poehler’s ‘Moxie’ Is Bringing Riot Grrrl — and Bikini Kill — to a New Generation
Hadley Robinson had never heard of Bikini Kill before she was cast in Moxie . Directed by Amy Poehler and based on Jennifer Mathieu’s 2017 young adult novel of the same name, the Netflix movie follows Robinson’s Vivian, a shy 16-year-old who sparks a rebellion at her high school when she starts anonymously publishing a feminist zine. Vivian is inspired, in part, by her discovery of a box in her mom’s closet loaded with riot grrrl paraphernalia — and the moment she hears the opening screech of feedback in the band’s iconic anthem “Rebel Girl,” followed by Kathleen Hanna ’s signature howl, she thrashes around her room like it’s 1993. As Robinson tells it, the acting wasn’t much of a reach. Stacey Abrams On Her Oscar-Contending Doc ‘All In,’ And How To “Right-Size Our Democracy”
After dealing with a narcissist in the White House for four years, it may be difficult to imagine a politician who doesn’t make everything about themself. But consider Stacey Abrams , the former Georgia gubernatorial candidate, who nearly won election in 2018 to become the country’s first Black woman governor. After that campaign made Abrams a national figure and an inspiration to Democrats, documentary directors came-a-calling, she says, but she turned them down. “I had been asked by many different filmmakers to consider doing a documentary about my race [for governor], about my story,” Abrams tells Deadline. She said she declined because what interested her wasn’t a documentary about herself, but one on voter suppression. TV Ratings: ‘Oprah With Meghan and Harry’ Delivers Big Audience for CBS
The couple's interview special with Winfrey draws one of the largest non-sports crowds of the 2020-21 TV season. CBS' interview special Oprah With Meghan and Harry delivered a big audience Sunday night. The two-hour special, produced by Winfrey's Harpo Productions, averaged better than 17 million viewers — 17.14 million, according to Nielsen's fast national numbers. Aside from the post-Super Bowl premiere of The Equalizer on Feb. 7, that's the biggest audience for any non-sports program on the broadcast networks this season. It earned a 2.6 rating in the key ad demographic of adults 18-49, trailing only a Thanksgiving night episode of The Masked Singer (which had a huge NFL lead-in) on the broadcast nets this season. Oprah With Meghan and Harry — which incited furious reactions in the British press Monday — was far and away the top show on TV Sunday by any measure. The closest show on the broadcast networks in total viewers was its lead-in, 60 Minutes , which drew … [Read more...] about TV Ratings: ‘Oprah With Meghan and Harry’ Delivers Big Audience for CBS
