AMC Entertainment announced it has closed a $600 million strategic investment from Silver Lake , a tech-oriented investment firm, and will use part of the proceeds to buy back Class B common shares owned by the Dalian Wanda Group. The deal will give Silver Lake, which has stakes in companies including Alibaba, Tesla and Endeavor, a seat on the board of the top exhibitor. AMC will also add a new independent director “with significant technology experience and knowledge, with support from Silver Lake,” the announcement said. The transaction signals a retreat from the U.S. movie theater business for the Chinese conglomerate Wanda, which took control of AMC in 2012 in a $2.6 billion deal. In June at CineEurope, AMC boss Adam Aron sought to quell rumors of a Wanda pullback, insisting that they had “not sold a single share in eight years,” though he conceded, “things are status quo until they are not.” Under the deal, senior unsecured convertible notes were issued … [Read more...] about AMC Entertainment Gets $600M Injection From Tech Investor Silver Lake, Sets Plan To Buy Back Some Wanda Shares

‘Summering’ Works Better as a Mood Than It Does a Movie
There’s a moment within the first few minutes of Summering — James Ponsoldt’s delicate, affectionate tribute to the wonder years (or more specifically, the seasonal wonder months) between childhood’s end and teenage riots — that captures the blurred, giddy adrenaline rush of youth in full bloom. Four girls are goofing around, hiding in bathtubs and scaring each other with masks. Someone’s mom shoos them all out of the house. And then the quartet begins to sprint across a front lawn in slow motion, screaming and giggling as they head straight toward an active sprinkler, framed by the refracting arc of a water-mist rainbow. It’s such an arresting image, so full of life and joy that you can feel yourself gasp as you watch it. When the sequence then cuts to a view of them running from the side, one of the girls begins doing cartwheels across the screen. You’re immediately dropped into the world of these suburban tweens, and whisked back to that point in life when all you needed was a … [Read more...] about ‘Summering’ Works Better as a Mood Than It Does a Movie
Fred Savage Accused of Forcing Himself on Ex-‘Wonder Years’ Crewmember in Bar Bathroom
A former crewmember on the reboot of The Wonder Years has accused Fred Savage of forcing himself on her at a bar one night in a new Hollywood Reporter piece detailing some of the allegations that may have led to Savage’s ouster from the show earlier this year. Back in May, Savage was fired from his role as executive producer and director of The Wonder Years following an investigation into allegations of inappropriate conduct. Executives at Disney, which owns ABC — the network on which The Wonder Years aired — declined to share details, though reports at the time highlighted incidents of “verbal outbursts and inappropriate behavior.” According to the new THR piece, Savage’s exit came after a group of six women who worked on the show sent a complaint to Disney and spoke to an HR executive about their concerns in February. While they all acknowledged that Savage could be kind, charismatic, and supportive, they claim he was also prone to bouts of anger and verbal … [Read more...] about Fred Savage Accused of Forcing Himself on Ex-‘Wonder Years’ Crewmember in Bar Bathroom
