Apple Launches Podcast Subscriptions Service, No Sign Of Major Move Into Original Audio Programming
Apple has launched a podcast subscriptions service that will allow listeners to sign up to premium versions of audio series. The move for Apple Podcasts Subscriptions was announced at Apple’s Tim Cook-hosted event. However, the tech giant didn’t, as some expected, unveil any major move into original podcast programming as some of its rivals such as Spotify have done over the past year. The service, which launches in May and will be available in 170 countries, will allow podcast fans to sign up for premium subscriptions to their favorite shows, giving them access to additional content or early and exclusive access to new series. Launch partners include Tenderfoot TV, Pushkin Industries, Radiotopia from PRX, and QCODE as well as media brands such as PR, the Los Angeles Times, The Athletic and Sony Music Entertainment. House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Greg Walden, R-Oregon, opened the hearing calling Facebook an American success story — a company that embodies the nation’s principles of freedom of speech and association. Facebook Network Breach Exposes Information On 50 Million Users — Updated
UPDATED throughout with more details about the security breach Facebook suffered an attack on its computer network that exposed information about 50 million users. Hackers took advantage of three separate vulnerabilities in Facebook’s software to steal tokens that allowed them to take over users’ accounts and harvest profile information, including their names, hometowns and gender. The company said it’s still investigating to determine whether these user accounts were misused. Facebook said it detected an unusual spike in activity on Sept. 19 and launched an investigation. On Tuesday, it uncovered the malicious attack, which exploited vulnerabilities introduced more than a year ago when Facebook created a new video upload feature. The company patched the bugs on Thursday and issued fresh digital access keys to the 50 million users whose accounts had been accessed.
