Oscar winner Natalie Portman is set to star and executive produce HBO Films ’ The Days of Abandonment , based on Elena Ferrante’s best-selling novel. The film, which is currently in pre-production, hails from writer-director Maggie Betts ( Novitiate ), Portman and her MountainA Films, Maven Screen Media, Len Amato’s Crash & Salvage and Fandango.  Ferrante also serves as an executive producer. Written and directed by Betts, The Days of Abandonment revolves around Tess, played by Portman. When Tess, a woman who abandoned her own dreams for a stable home life, is in turn abandoned by her husband, her world is thrown off its axis. Stay Gold Features and Topic Studios have teamed up to finance and produce Nanny , a horror film written and directed by Sierra Leonean-American filmmaker Nikyatu Jusu , in her feature directorial debut. Nikkia Moulterie (R andom Acts of Flyness ) and Stay Gold’s Daniela Taplin Lundberg ( Harriet , Honey Boy ) are producing the project, which will begin shooting this June in New York City. The script landed on the 2020 Black List and was also selected for the 2019 Sundance Institute Creative Producing Lab & Summit, Sundance’s 2020 Writer’s Lab, and the 2020 Director’s Lab. The percentage of top-grossing films that featured female protagonists “dropped dramatically” last year, down from 40% in 2019 to just 29% in 2020 – a decline of more than 27%, according to the latest study from Dr. Martha Lauzen , executive director of the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University . The report found that after two years of gains, last year’s percentage of female protagonists was the same as in 2016 – the year before the start of the #MeToo movement. And the numbers don’t get any better with age: last year, males 40 and over accounted for 52% of all male characters in the 100 top domestic-grossing films, while females 40 and over comprised 32% of all female characters. The report also found that major female characters experience “a precipitous drop” from their 30s to their 40s – falling from 31% of the roles to just 13%. The acclaimed new album Promises from jazz great Pharoah Sanders , electronic musician Floating Points , and the London Symphony Orchestra will be part of a new film that explores artist Julie Mehretu’s 2003 painting, Congress . The film, Promises: Through Congress , will premiere virtually April 24th at 3 p.m. ET/12 p.m. PT via the Whitney in New York and the Broad in Los Angeles. Registration for the premiere is free and open on the websites of both museums. The film, directed by Trevor Tweeten, comes after portions of Congress — which is a large, 72- x 96-inch ink and acrylic on canvas piece — were featured on the cover of Promises . Tweeten filmed the movie at the Broad this winter, and a trailer shows how the slow camera pans over the sprawling canvas pair with Sanders and Floating Points’ own expansive musical work.
