Todd Snider’s New Concept Album is a Funky, Funny Tribute to Recently Departed Friends

· March 5, 2021 ·

Todd Snider ’s live shows are unparalleled experiences. The folk singer delivers hilarious, heartbreaking songs about his life, punctuating them with stories that can stretch as long as 18 minutes — about everything from the time he joined a Memphis cover band called K.K. Rider to the time he took mushrooms and immediately quit his high school football team. “When people on the plane ask me what I do,” says Snider, “I say, ‘Pretty much just like “Alice’s Restaurant.”‘ I just talk. It’s a nervous tick.” When the pandemic hit, the crowds went away, but Snider didn’t. Beginning in late March, he started broadcasting on Sunday mornings from the Purple Building, a clubhouse/rehearsal space in East Nashville. Sitting alone in front of a purple tapestry, Snider took requests, played covers like “Ring Them Bells” and “Mr. Bojangles,” and eventually performed his own albums in full. The most poignant show happened in April, after the death of John Prine , who had given Snider his first … [Read more...] about Todd Snider’s New Concept Album is a Funky, Funny Tribute to Recently Departed Friends

Focus Features Releases ‘Boogie’ From Eddie Huang; ‘My Salinger Year’ And ‘Boss Level’ Debut – Specialty Preview

· March 5, 2021 ·

Even though its moving at a slower pace than many would like, the vaccine rollout is starting to gain some traction and in turn, moviegoers are going to start setting foot in theaters — safely of course. That said, the specialty box office space might be hearing some more coin drop into its piggy bank in the forthcoming months. It’s been quite a journey, but we’ll get there slowly yet surely. Eddie Huang, who is best known for writing the best-selling Fresh Off the Boat: A Memoir which was the inspiration for the popular ABC sitcom, makes his feature directorial debut with Boogie which Focus Features releases in theaters today. The story follows Alfred Chin (Taylor Takahashi) who goes by the name “Boogie”. He is a basketball phenom living in Queens, New York and dreams of one day playing in the NBA. However, his parents have other plans for him. They want him to put all of his focus on earning a scholarship to an elite college. Through it all, Boogie must find a … [Read more...] about Focus Features Releases ‘Boogie’ From Eddie Huang; ‘My Salinger Year’ And ‘Boss Level’ Debut – Specialty Preview

In Conversation: Sophia Loren And Frank Langella, Two Titans Of Screen And Stage, Look Back On Their Predestined Drive To Perform

· March 5, 2021 ·

When Netflix suggested I might like to preside over a conversation between Sophia Loren and Frank Langella , two titans of the screen and stage, it felt churlish to turn the opportunity down. They both appear in films handled by the streamer this year; Loren makes her return to screens after more than a decade away in The Life Ahead , directed by her son Edoardo Ponti, and Frank Langella delivers a blistering turn as Judge Julius Hoffman in Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 . And what to say about two of the most accomplished actors of their generation that hasn’t been better spoken by the many decades of extraordinary work both of them have authored? Frank Langella, of course, made his name in the theater, where he has won no fewer than four Tony Awards for performances in plays by Peter Morgan, Florian Zeller, Edward Albee and Ivan Turgenev. He has brought some of those plays to the screen, notably reprising the roles of Dracula and Richard Nixon in … [Read more...] about In Conversation: Sophia Loren And Frank Langella, Two Titans Of Screen And Stage, Look Back On Their Predestined Drive To Perform

See Kings of Leon Perform ‘The Bandit’ on ‘Colbert’

· March 5, 2021 ·

Fresh off the release of their new album When You See Yourself , Kings of Leon kicked off a two-night stand on The Late Show with “ The Bandit ,” a track from their latest LP. For the virtual performance, the Followill gang congregated on a soundstage to breeze through When You See Yourself’ s first single. Additionally, Kings of Leon marked their new album’s arrival by dropping a video for the album track “Stormy Weather.” Kings of Leon are also the first artist of their stature to release new music in the form of a non-fungible token (NFT) , which utilizes blockchain technology to create unique packages. Dubbed “NFT Yourself,” the album is offered in three packages: One type is a special album package, a second type offers live show perks like front-row seats for life, and a third type is just for exclusive audiovisual art. “We approached the release of When You See Yourself in such an analog way, from the band’s approach in the studio to shooting … [Read more...] about See Kings of Leon Perform ‘The Bandit’ on ‘Colbert’

Kings of Leon Create an Arena-Rock of the Mind on ‘When You See Yourself’

· March 5, 2021 ·

Kings of Leon frontman Caleb Followill is an arena-rock idealist, a firm believer in the undying power of setting up shop at the 50-yard line of rock & roll expectations and doing very brisk business. “Like in a mainstream melody / Oh, I want to take you in!” he told us on the Kings’ last album, 2016’s Walls , a subtle come-on that was a pretty fair assessment of why his band’s music hit home with millions. So, what do these Tennessee titans do in times like these, when there aren’t any arenas to be rocked? In some ways, the band’s eighth album is an arena rock of the mind, tempering the strapping anthemics of hits like “Sex on Fire” and “Use Somebody” for songs that stretch out en route to arriving at a serene kind of swagger.
