Actors’ Equity has decided to force 99-seat theaters in Los Angeles to pay their actors at least minimum wage – which is currently $9 an hour and going up to $10 next year. The move by the union’s National Council comes just hours after reports that local Equity members voted overwhelmingly to reject the pay increase, which many fear will put small houses out of business. The new minimum wage rule goes into effect April 22 for producers who have not produced before under the 99-seat plan. For those who have produced under the plan, there is a grace period allowing a year for a transition to the new options. The new deal actually is a compromise – it allows theaters with fewer than than 50 seats to produce up to 16 performances of a single production budgeted under $20,000 without having to pay minimum wage. It also allows L.A. actors to collaborate as a group to self-produce theater without the requirement of an Equity contract and without having to pay minimum wage. Other terms … [Read more...] about Actors’ Equity To Require Minimum Wage At LA’s 99-Seat Theaters, But Smaller Stages Get A Break

The Never-Ending Psychedelic Trip of Michael Pollan
There was a time when psychedelics such as LSD, mushrooms, and mescaline were primarily relegated to those who were wild and weird enough to brave the legal and social throes imposed by the War on Drugs. But those days are ending — if they haven’t already slipped into the past. Today these substances are increasingly embraced for their therapeutic, spiritual, and recreational value, and journalist Michael Pollan has emerged as arguably the most prominent champion of their kaleidoscopic rewards. “It’s for spiritual experience,” he explained to Rolling Stone. “It’s for self-exploration. It’s for setting priorities. It’s for breaking habits. There are all these other ways people are using them. And we have this word ‘recreation’ that we think is negative, but we should go back and think — what is that? Well, re-creation is a very positive thing and people are using them to re-create themselves. And it seems to me that’s as legitimate as any other use.” At 67, and having … [Read more...] about The Never-Ending Psychedelic Trip of Michael Pollan
Playboy Mansion Remodel Continues for 4th Year, Still Slow Going
Backgrid The Playboy Mansion's face-lift is now in its 4th year, with expenses breaking the $1 mil mark, but to the naked eye ... it's hard to see where all that money's going. According to building permits, the property's had a bunch of work done since 2020 ... including a revision of the roof, adding detached living quarters, interior revision, an updated elevator, new fire sprinklers, underground generator, new lighting, fixing the basement foundation and removal of the spa area to install a new one. Backgrid Tons of permits have been filed, and the most up-to-date number we can see for all those renovations is $1.6 million. Backgrid Playboy Mansion Renovations So Far Costing Just Over $1 Million As we reported, the place had $1M in renovations as of 2020, so that's hardly a quantum leap over the course of 4 years. The fix-ups began back in 2019 when billionaire Daren Metropoulos started filing permits to renovate the … [Read more...] about Playboy Mansion Remodel Continues for 4th Year, Still Slow Going
Kerry Fights Back
“I’m going straight to the White House,” John Kerry says. “I’m thrilled with where the campaign is right now.” Just 90 minutes earlier, on this warm afternoon in late September, he stood on an outdoor stage at the University of Pennsylvania campus in downtown Philadelphia and gazed out onto a sea of 20,000 supporters. The school had hosted only one other rally this big in recent memory – when Bill Clinton came through on his re-election tour in 1996. It’s heady stuff when a first-time presidential candidate draws crowds comparable in size to those of a popular sitting president. “I feel as if we have finally gotten the American people and the press simultaneously focused on the real issues,” he says. “Things I’ve been talking about for two years. George Bush has made catastrophic mistakes in Iraq, catastrophic mistakes in foreign policy. He’s shown bad judgment, made bad choices about how to proceed in a war on terror. I think he’s also out of touch with the American people on what … [Read more...] about Kerry Fights Back
Jeff Van Gundy: Cavaliers Winning 2017 Finals Would Be LeBron’s Greatest Accomplishment
The NBA playoffs have been prequel to the Finals, the third in a heart-pounding trilogy, in the same way that Episodes I to III of Star Wars are prequel to the original trilogy. Sure, they take place nominally in the same galaxy and involve many of the same people, but the quality gap is wider than Jabba the Hutt. So, as we’ve trudged towards the inevitable – Golden State vs. Cleveland in the rubber match – we’ve become increasingly reliant on our announcers to carry us between stretches of sublimity from Steph, dominance from LeBron or shotmaking from Kyrie. Jeff Van Gundy is perhaps the best in the business at filling the time in blowouts. That’s damning him with faint praise. When he teams with Mark Jackson, Doris Burke and Mike Breen, Van Gundy is the star of the top team in the business. No wonder they’ll be calling all the games for ABC. Since exiting coaching in 2007, Van Gundy has been a perennial candidate for the highest-profile jobs. Though none has panned out yet, … [Read more...] about Jeff Van Gundy: Cavaliers Winning 2017 Finals Would Be LeBron’s Greatest Accomplishment
Donnie Wahlberg on 10 Things You Forgot About Lakers, Celtics Rivalry
Few sports rivalries are as storied as Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers. The two teams have been separated, historically, in just about every category imaginable. The Lakers of the Sixties and Seventies were spearheaded by the twin stars of Jerry West and Elgin Baylor. Though Bill Russell was indisputably the head of the early Celtics, their style – predicated on smothering defense and fast-break basketball – was far more team-oriented than their Hollywood rivals. It worked, too: The Celtics began the rivalry winning 7-0 against the Lakers in the Finals, beginning with a 1959 sweep of the then-Minneapolis franchise. Boston won eight straight titles and eventually every title in the 1960s besides 1967, when the Philadelphia 76ers took home the trophy. In the 1980s, the differences grew even more distinct. Earvin “Magic” Johnson personified the Lakers with his gigawatt smile and larger-than-life persona (and stature; he was a six-foot, ten-inch point guard). He was black and he … [Read more...] about Donnie Wahlberg on 10 Things You Forgot About Lakers, Celtics Rivalry
Why Golden State Warriors Aren’t Really the NBA’s Bad Guys
It feels like the beginning of something big. Analysts and fans have been talking about it since the Fourth of July, feeling some feelings about it, like it’s something we’ll be looking at for years to come. On Thursday, October 13th, in advance of the Los Angeles Clippers playing the Portland Trail Blazers in a preseason match-up, Paul “The Truth” Pierce – 2008 NBA Finals MVP, en route to the hall of fame, playing his final season with the Clippers this year – laid down some law about what he sees as the “new generation.” “I understand when you have great players on losing teams who are tired of losing, struggling in the playoffs every year – you’re the lone star,” he said on a league-sponsored Sirius XM show. “I’ve been in that position. I could have left Boston years ago, but I stuck it out. I just feel like when you’re that close, as a competitor, you don’t go join the team that just put you out.” When he said he understood, he was referring to his experience carrying the … [Read more...] about Why Golden State Warriors Aren’t Really the NBA’s Bad Guys
College Basketball Star Lonzo Ball’s Hollywood Dreams Could Come True
The Los Angeles Lakers had a lot riding on the 2017 NBA Draft Lottery. Even though they had the third worst record in the NBA this season – only the Phoenix Suns (24-58) and Brooklyn Nets (20-62) finished below them in the standings – there was a 53.1 percent chance that their pick would fall out of the top three in the upcoming draft. If that was the case, their pick would’ve gone to the Philadelphia 76ers as a result of the Steve Nash trade the Lakers made with the Suns in 2012, which would’ve made their current rebuild a whole lot harder. Fortunately for the Lakers, their pick ended up being No. 2 – start the conspiracy theories ! – meaning they get to keep their pick in the 2017 NBA Draft and select one of the brightest stars in college basketball. All signs point towards the Boston Celtics, who have the first pick despite finishing the season with the best record in the Eastern Conference, drafting Markelle Fultz, so the Lakers will have an opportunity to draft one of … [Read more...] about College Basketball Star Lonzo Ball’s Hollywood Dreams Could Come True
7 Knockout Mike Tyson Cameos
From the beginning of his career, Mike Tyson has been irresistible to Hollywood’s various screens: when you’re the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world with a high-pitched lisp, you’re an instant surreal punchline. Iron Mike has played along in a slew of rap videos, movies ranging from Rocky Balboa to Scary Movie 5, and TV shows ranging from Law & Order: Special Victims Unit to The Simpsons (which rendered an unauthorized version of him as Drederick Tatum). Here’s seven of our favorite Tyson cameos over the years. Read an excerpt from Mike Tyson’s ‘Undisputed Truth’ 1. DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, “I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson” (1989) Back when Will Smith was a rapper rather than box-office king and show-biz patriarch, he needed a hit to follow up “Parents Just Don’t Understand.” He came up with this tall tale about having an attack of hubris and getting in the ring with Tyson (despite the opening warning of somebody who claimed he saw a Tyson … [Read more...] about 7 Knockout Mike Tyson Cameos
