R. Kelly Sentenced to 30 Years in Prison on Racketeering, Sex Trafficking Charges
R. Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison Wednesday after being found guilty of all counts of racketeering and sex trafficking against him at his Brooklyn federal trial last year. Prior to sentencing, seven of Kelly’s victims addressed the court to share impact statements and speak directly to their abuser. “I am a representation of every woman, boy, child, man that you have ever afflicted with your deplorable, inexplicable acts and with that I leave you with yourself, Robert Sylvester Kelly,” “Angela” — who also testified during the trial — said to Kelly. “You used your fame and power to groom and coach underage boys and girls for your own sexual gratification.” Kitti Jones, who spoke to Rolling Stone in 2017 about the abuse she suffered during her two-year relationship with Kelly, told the singer Wednesday prior to sentencing, “Many of us have been waiting for this day to come.” Another victim, Jane Doe 2, also aimed her impact statement at Kelly. “I don’t know … [Read more...] about R. She Sang ‘Gimme Shelter’ With the Rolling Stones. Then ‘Tina’ Producers Fired Her for It
When Chanel Haynes showed up at Milan’s San Siro Stadium to sing “Gimme Shelter” with the Rolling Stones on June 21, she had a lot on her mind: She had spent the past few months in London portraying Tina Turner in the West End production of Tina, and there was a show that night. On the last-minute flight to Italy, she played several different renditions of “Gimme Shelter,” trying to figure out the best way to deliver Merry Clayton’s visceral vocals from the 1969 original. “I was perplexed,” Haynes tells Rolling Stone via Zoom from London. “I was thinking, ‘Do I do it the way Merry recorded it? Do I do it the way people are used to hearing it live? Do I do it my way?’ I knew that I just had one shot to execute.” All of these questions were swirling through her mind when drummer Steve Jordan greeted her and … [Read more...] about She Sang ‘Gimme Shelter’ With the Rolling Stones. 8 Things We Learned From Tuesday’s Bombshell-Packed Jan. 6 Hearing
The Jan. 6 committee set high expectations when it announced on Monday that it would be holding an emergency hearing on Tuesday, citing “recently obtained evidence.” The hearing did not disappoint, with Cassidy Hutchinson , a former aide to former Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, over the course of just under two hours painting a damning, bombshell-filled account of former President Trump’s actions before, during, and after the Capitol attack. Trump and his team have for the past year and a half sought to distance themselves from the violence on Jan. 6, claiming it was an unforeseen result of a small group of rioters who were acting independently of any direction from Trump officials. Trump, the official line has been, issued a statement aimed at quelling the violence, and certainly didn’t want any part of it. That narrative was never credible. After Tuesday’s congressional hearing on Jan. 6, that narrative is dead. “This is the smoking gun,” Sol Wisenberg, a former … [Read more...] about 8 Things We Learned From Tuesday’s Bombshell-Packed Jan. 6 Hearing
