As part of Deadline x Rolling Stone, a special issue of our AwardsLine print magazine dedicated to music in cinema, Noel Murray runs through the 20 Best Oscar music moments. For most of the history of the Academy Awards, the musical numbers have been at once glitzy and sappy, featuring fresh-scrubbed young dancers in spangled costumes, spinning and kicking behind a couple of old Hollywood stars. But every now and then, amid all the schmaltz, the producers of the Oscars telecasts have set aside some airtime to showcase some of the best singers and the snappiest songs of their eras. Beginning in the 1970s especially, the Academy began opening up more to rock ’n’ roll and R&B, around the same time that the producers started asking the Best Original Song nominees’ original artists to perform. Ever since, the show has featured some the music industry’s biggest stars, alongside a few lovable oddballs and critics’ darlings. All of these types are represented on the list below. … [Read more...] about Oscar’s Top 20: Charting The Best Musical Moments In The History Of The Academy Awards Telecast – Deadline x Rolling Stone

How Marielle Heller Conquered Hollywood One No at a Time
Marielle Heller had tried everything. She was nearly a year into her campaign to adapt The Diary of a Teenage Girl , cartoonist Phoebe Gloeckner’s semi-autobiographical graphic novel, into a play, and she was no closer to her goal. At the time, around 2007, Heller had zero writing or directing credits to her name. But she was convinced that Gloeckner’s story, about a 15-year-old testing the limits of her sexual desires in 1970s San Francisco, was one that she wanted to tell. So she busted out the nuclear option. “I just wouldn’t take no for an answer,” Heller recalls. “I called Phoebe and was like, ‘I don’t accept it. I don’t accept a no. Let me sit down with you. I went to Michigan and stayed with her and her kids, and got to know her better.” She’s fairly certain it was the cat photos that did it in the end. Oscar Original Score Shortlist Hits Flat Note Despite Mix Of Esteemed Veterans & Fresh Blood
The Academy Awards’ shortlists are a blessing and a curse. Blessing in that it truly helps awards strategists and publicists hone their efforts and marketing dollars toward a sampling of candidates in the final run-up to nominations. In the case of the Music Branch and the Original Score category, film scores are typically punished over quota rules, i.e. this year a film’s music needs to be comprised of 60% of original score, versus 50% in prior years. Also, if any of the music was ever pre-conceived in another medium, not specifically written for the film; then forget it. You’re disqualified. I.E. a bulk of Mark Orton’s haunting folksy score from Alexander Payne’s 2013 feature Nebraska were from tracks the composer previously wrote, despite the cues’ electricity in the Will Forte-Bruce Dern-June Squibb black and white dramedy.
