The longest-acting movie awards voting committee got it done in about 3½ hours this year, with the New York Film Critics Circle finally naming Focus Features’ Tár as Best film of 2022. The movie, which reps filmmaker Todd Fields return to the camera in 16 years also saw its star Cate Blanchett win Best Actress. Oscars Snubs & Surprises: Tom Cruise, Viola Davis, Taylor Swift, David Bowie & Women Directors Spurned

January 20, 2023 by deadline.com

The nominations for the 95th Academy Awards were unveiled this morning, and while for some including Everything Everywhere All at Once , All Quiet on the Western Front and The Banshees of Inisherin the race to Oscar glory is on, others never made it off the starting line. Announced in the pre-dawn hours in Los Angeles by self-described “over-caffeinated” past Oscar winner Riz Ahmed and M3GAN star Allison Williams, the nominations covered a lot of ground with the blockbusters, streamer offerings and traditional dramas in the mix this year. However, not every contender made it into final races. Take a look at our list of the most noteworthy performers and projects that didn’t get any appreciation from the members of the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences on Tuesday — plus, some names that were read out that no one really expected. Also, please tell us who you think we and AMPAS overlooked. We’re also getting a look at the upcoming season in a new teaser trailer. You can watch it above. The teaser picks up following the Season 3 finale when patriarch Logan Roy (Brian Cox) betrayed his adult kids. In the trailer, Siobhan (Sarah Snook) says “This is not about getting back at Dad, but if it hurts him, it doesn’t bother me.” Adds Kendall (Jeremy Strong), “It’s a tightrope walk on a straight razor… 500-foot reputational drop.” Created by Jesse Armstrong, Succession explores themes of power and family dynamics through the eyes of patriarch Logan Roy (Cox) and his four grown children, Kendall (Strong), Siobhan (Snook), Roman (Kieran Culkin), and Connor (Alan Ruck). SXSW Second Wave Includes UAR’s ‘Bottoms’, Donald Glover’s ‘Swarm’ Series, Michelle Yeoh’s ‘American Born Chinese’ & More

February 1, 2023 by deadline.com

South by Southwest on Wednesday revealed the second half of its lineup for this year’s edition, set for March 10-19. This includes Visions, the Global section presented by Mubi, 24 Beats, and Festival Favorites plus numerous additions to the Headliners, TV Premieres, Narrative and Documentary Spotlight and other sections. New on the sked is Janine Nabers and Donald Glover ’s Amazon Studios series Swarm and Lee Sung Jin’s Beef , respectively the opening- and closing-night TV premieres. They join the previously announced opening-night world premiere of Paramount’s Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves . This year’s closing-night film will be announced closer to the event. In addition, there is another movie to be announced for the fest’s Monday, March 13 slot. Given the Oscars on March 12 (note the festival sets their dates five years in advance), I understand that evening’s lineup will ease a bit with amped-up feature premiere wattage placed Monday night. … [Read more...] about SXSW Second Wave Includes UAR’s ‘Bottoms’, Donald Glover’s ‘Swarm’ Series, Michelle Yeoh’s ‘American Born Chinese’ & More
