Kevin Mayer , whose long tenure at Disney culminated in the successful launch of Disney+, is joining sports streaming outfit DAZN as chairman. He replaces former colleague John Skipper , the longtime former ESPN executive who steered DAZN through launches in the U.S. and other global territories. Backed by billionaire Len Blavatnik, DAZN specializes in boxing and soccer, but also controls rights to several other sports in various territories. Given its resources, the service has been considered a candidate to make a play for more high-end sports rights. The value of those rights has declined in some international markets, making them attractive, and is becoming unwieldy for traditional U.S. media companies. In keeping with its new mission to expand to 200 countries, a plan first reported by Deadline last fall , the emphasis for DAZN is expected to remain outside the U.S. in the near term. John Hiatt, Jerry Douglas Band Preview Collaborative Album With ‘All the Lilacs in Ohio’
John Hiatt and the instrumental aces of the Jerry Douglas Band have teamed up for their first collaborative album, Leftover Feelings . The first release from the project, which is due out May 21st, is “All the Lilacs in Ohio.” A lively uptempo tune driven by Douglas’ lyrical Dobro licks and soaring fiddle, “All the Lilacs in Ohio” tells of a love that never quite happened and the powerful memory that still lingers. “You met her there on a New York City stair/You were throwing up on your shoes,” Hiatt sings, his gruff vocals setting the scene for this fleeting encounter. His protagonist is left with a handkerchief that smells like springtime and he carries the item with him, dreaming of what might have been. The musicians come together for a rousing group sing-along in the chorus, “All the lilacs in Ohio, there ya go/In city streets and dirty winter snow,” they sing. Leftover Feelings was recorded at Nashville’s RCA Studio B, the same facility where Elvis Presley, the Everly … [Read more...] about John Hiatt, Jerry Douglas Band Preview Collaborative Album With ‘All the Lilacs in Ohio’

Michael B. Jordan stars as the Tom Clancy hero John Clark in the new trailer for Without Remorse , Amazon Prime Video ’s adaptation of Clancy’s 1993 novel. In addition to Jordan, the film also stars Jamie Bell, Guy Pearce, Lauren London, and Jodie Turner-Smith. Sicario: Day of the Soldado and ZeroZeroZero director Stefano Sollima helms the blockbuster, with Taylor Sheridan ( Sicario, Wind River, Yellowstone ) and Will Staples co-writing the screenplay. ‘The Willoughbys’ Director Kris Pearn Adapts Children’s Book By Lois Lowry For Netflix, Leaning Into Its “Roald Dahl Subversiveness”
With The Willoughbys , writer/director Kris Pearn adapted a beloved children’s book of the same name by Lois Lowry, looking to be as faithful as possible to the “subversive” nature of her story, while bringing to it his own personal touch. Pearn’s second feature, following 2013’s Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 , centers on the Willoughby children, who grew up with parents who could not be more disinterested in them. Exploring the sometimes-wide gap between the families we’re born into and those we choose, it watches as the kids send their selfish guardians off on vacation, setting off on a globetrotting adventure and forging new connections. In conversation with Deadline, Pearn breaks down his narrative and visual approach to the feature—which debuted on Netflix last April—a clever, darkly comedic parable, through which he hoped to say “something real.” Related Story 'The Willoughbys' Review: Ricky Gervais As A Chatty Cat Leads Cool Voice Cast In … [Read more...] about ‘The Willoughbys’ Director Kris Pearn Adapts Children’s Book By Lois Lowry For Netflix, Leaning Into Its “Roald Dahl Subversiveness”
