A savage journey to the heart of the american dream

On the Road With Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and the Rolling Thunder Revue

January 15, 1976 by www.rollingstone.com

B ackstage at the Rolling Thunder Revue , Allen Ginsberg (who has just dedicated his book of First Blues to “Minstrel Guruji Bob Dylan “) asks the convener of these revels, these winds of the old days, “Are you getting any pleasure out of this, Bob?” The convener, who can use words as if they were fun-house mirrors when he’s pressed, fingers his gray cowboy hat and looks at the poet. The first he had ever heard of Allen Ginsberg and the kind of people he hung out with was in Time around 1958 while he was still a kid in Minnesota. (“I’m Allen Ginsberg and I’m crazy.” “My name is Peter Orlovsky and I’m crazy as a daisy.” “My name is Gregory Corso and I’m not crazy at all.” That had broken up the kid in Minnesota.) Now, here on the road with this hooting, rocking carnival of time present and time past, both perhaps present in time future, is Allen, who has survived serene and curious, in a business suit. “Pleasure?” Dylan finds the word without taste, without … [Read more...] about On the Road With Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and the Rolling Thunder Revue

Guns, Rhymes, God, and Politics: Shyne’s Epic Fall and Rise

May 22, 2022 by www.rollingstone.com

At an empty beach bar in Corozal, a shaggy town of a few thousand people just minutes from where northern Belize meets Mexico’s share of the Yucatan Peninsula, waves crash into a jagged, rocky breakwater. It’s 9 p.m., the kitchenis about to close, and the only people left are some young, very loud, and very sober American missionaries. Another languid Caribbean day is winding down, but my dinner companion, Moses Michael Levi “ Shyne ” Barrow, has no desire to linger over a meal and conversation. He’s shoveling in his fried fish, rice, and beans faster than an escaped hostage, and brushing off my questions about his remarkable life — from Brooklyn-raised rapper to convicted felon to Orthodox Jewish convert to prominent politician here in the country of his birth — with blunt rejoinders. “I want you to be more specific, rather than just sitting here having a therapy session,” he grumbles, raising his hand to make a drink order. Folks come to Corozal to fish, visit … [Read more...] about Guns, Rhymes, God, and Politics: Shyne’s Epic Fall and Rise

100 Years, 100 Maverick Movies

December 30, 1999 by www.rollingstone.com

T he way I see it, and I’ve got the conch, the best movies of the last 100 years were made by mavericks who busted rules to follow their obsessions. We’re talking about a century of cinema, but it’s still rock & roll to me. I had certain criteria: Each movie had to embody that rock spirit of artful defiance. Each director had to be limited to only one movie – otherwise you could just list the collected works of Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, John Ford, Billy Wilder and Martin Scorsese and end it. Anything dutiful I tossed. Don’t look for the biggest cash cow ( Titanic ), the winner of the most Oscars ( Ben-Hur ) or film -school staples like Battleship Potemkin . The 100 maverick movies on this list have one more thing in common: They’re alive. 1. The Godfather Trilogy (1972, 1974, 1990, Francis Ford Coppola): The flawed Part III barely slides in on goodwill. No matter. This is entertainment raised to the level of art: an offer you can’t refuse. Coppola gives … [Read more...] about 100 Years, 100 Maverick Movies

What Makes Tom Cruise’s Star Shine So Brightly? Directors Share Their Insights – Cannes Disruptors

May 17, 2022 by deadline.com

Top Gun : Maverick ’s Cannes Film Festival premiere marks another high point in the movie star career of Tom Cruise . The actor turns 60 on July 3, and unlike most leading men of that age who become quicker to call for the stunt double, Cruise shows little evidence of slowing down after 43 films. If anything, his Mission: Impossible stunts seem to grow more ambitiously dangerous, not to mention the fact that he and director Doug Liman will become the first to actually shoot a space film in space for real—aboard one of Elon Musk’s SpaceX crafts with the cooperation of NASA. So how does Cruise continue to carve such a path? “I’ve gotten to work with a number of actors who’ve had great success and long careers, Tom being at the top of the heap,” says Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski. “He approaches every day with the enthusiasm that it’s his first movie, and at the same time puts the effort into it like it’s his last movie. That’s a good attitude … [Read more...] about What Makes Tom Cruise’s Star Shine So Brightly? Directors Share Their Insights – Cannes Disruptors

Ariana DeBose Talks ‘Kraven The Hunter’, ‘Two And Only’ & Refusing To “Fit In A Box” — Deadline Disruptors

May 18, 2022 by deadline.com

“There is indeed a place for us,” Ariana DeBose said on the Oscar stage back in March. As the first Afro Latina and the first openly queer woman of color to win, she addressed her acceptance speech—for her role of Anita in Steven Spielberg ’s West Side Story —to those who have ever questioned their identity and find themselves in “the gray spaces”. In the audience that night the 90-year-old Rita Moreno was in tears. Having played Anita 60 years earlier, she had been the first Latina ever to win an acting Oscar. And now DeBose carries that torch forward. A woman who set aside her fears and told Spielberg “no” to reading at the first West Side Story audition because she hadn’t had adequate time to prepare, she was Tony-nominated for her role in Summer: The Donna Summer Musical , lauded for her work on the original cast of Hamilton , and spent a decade on stage before making her name on screen. In Ryan Murphy’s The Prom , she played a closeted cheerleader, drawing … [Read more...] about Ariana DeBose Talks ‘Kraven The Hunter’, ‘Two And Only’ & Refusing To “Fit In A Box” — Deadline Disruptors

Cannes Review: Director James Gray’s ‘Armageddon Time’

May 19, 2022 by deadline.com

Writer-director James Gray has been to the Cannes Film Festival in competition on four previous occasions with We Own the Night, The Yards, The Immigrant and Two Lovers but has yet to walk away with a prize. Maybe the fifth time will be the charm? It certainly would be deserving as Gray comes back to his beloved New York City roots with the highly autobiographical and intriguingly titled Armageddon Time . Lest you think that with that title this is more akin to his previous film, the Brad Pitt-starring sci-fi Ad Astra, think again. It couldn’t be farther apart and reps a return to his more frequent thoughtful character-driven family drama explorations rather than space, though that figures in at least one way. With Ad Astra and the exceptional and haunting jungle epic The Lost City of Z ( my favorite of all his films and one of the best of any kind this century), Gray had drifted from the films that brought him to Cannes. But he is back in familiar territory, … [Read more...] about Cannes Review: Director James Gray’s ‘Armageddon Time’

Kevin Morby Travels to Memphis and Has a Metaphysical Reawakening on ‘This Is a Photograph’

May 16, 2022 by www.rollingstone.com

There’s something strange about Memphis. Nestled along the muddy waters of the Mississippi River, the city lies shrouded in an aura of perpetual gloom, its skyline dominated by a mammoth, metal-clad pyramid filled not with treasures, but a Bass Pro Shop superstore. Unable to escape its murky past — yellow fever, massacres and assassinations, untimely demises — the city remains burdened by the stench of death lingering in the hot, humid air. It’s not the happiest place on earth, but it does make an ideal locale to ruminate on mortality. So, when it came time to begin work on his introspective seventh studio record, singer-songwriter Kevin Morby ventured off to Memphis, holed himself up in the city’s historic Peabody Hotel, and began his search for not only artistic inspiration but also a sort of metaphysical reawakening. The result of that Tennessee sojourn is This Is a Photograph, an album of emotional ephemera set to song, culled from lives lived and lives imagined. … [Read more...] about Kevin Morby Travels to Memphis and Has a Metaphysical Reawakening on ‘This Is a Photograph’
