Scarcely a day goes by in which I don’t find myself lost in some warm and fuzzy memory related to the Harry Potter series. Nearly twenty-one years after the first book hit stands, I’m still shedding tears over Dobby, shaking my fists at Umbridge, and wondering what a true Butterbeer really tastes like. J.K. Rowling gifted us with a magical world readers never wanted to leave, especially for those of us who were lucky enough to grow up in the Potter generation. While I love each and every precious book in this series as if it were my first-born child, when it comes down to it, not every Potter book is created equal. Like it or not, some installments of the series clearly rise to the top, while others float quietly towards the bottom. Now, this second film series set in the world of Harry Potter will continue later in 2018 with the debut of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.Continuing the stories of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogel), Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston), and Queenie Goldstein (Alison Sudol), the film will also introduce a younger version of Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) as they fight against Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp). When it comes to narrative and character mistakes, even J.K. Rowling is not infallible. This is certainly the case when we take an in-depth look into the magical world of Harry Potter. In the past, we have discussed the gaping plot holes in the Harry Potter series, as well as blatant issues with some of Rowling’s characters – namely, Harry Potter and Professor Dumbledore. But there are more complex problems with Rowling’s magical world, and in particular, the character development of certain figures. Sure, while we struggled with Dumbledore and Harry’s choices at times, Rowling did a very good job with consistency and believability. For other characters, though, we do have questions—and for good reason. For instance, why did Rowling decide to villainize supporting female characters and subtly compare them to main female characters like Ginny Weasley and Hermione Granger? This was a strange choice for Rowling, given her own feminist views and … [Read more...] about Harry Potter: 15 Characters That J.K. Rowling Wants Us To Forget About
