How the Media Failed Britney Spears and Dylan Farrow

· February 24, 2021 ·

Within the last three weeks, TV’s documentary explosion has given us two damning close-ups on decades-old celebrity scandals. In one, an insatiable media-industrial complex takes a vulnerable young woman into its maw, judging her sexuality and questioning, then actively undermining, her sanity. In the other, it happens again. The main difference between them lies in who the celebrity is at the center of each public maelstrom — and how that simple fact determines who survives in its wake. Framing Britney Spears , a New York Times -produced documentary that premiered February 5th and is now streaming on Hulu , forces us to look anew at Spears’ shot-out-of-a-cannon rise as a teenager and public implosion several years later, both a function of relentless media attention. Some of that attention was courted, sure, as it would be by any young pop star, male or female. But the tenor of the media fervor, the implicit slack-jawed drooling and pawing, the pure … [Read more...] about How the Media Failed Britney Spears and Dylan Farrow

Ian MacKaye Talks ‘Woodstock’ Soundtrack Obsession in New Book Excerpt

· February 24, 2021 ·

Hardcore legend Ian MacKaye explains how Woodstock and an unexpected house guest helped lay the foundation for his love of music in this new excerpt from Eric Spitznagel’s new book, Rock Stars on the Record: The Albums That Changed Their Lives . The book consists of interviews with an array of artists discussing the music that influenced them most when they were kids. Along with MacKaye, the book features Laura Jane Grace, Mitski, Cherie Currie, Mac DeMarco, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Suzi Quatro and more. For MacKaye, his parents weren’t a particularly potent source of musical inspiration, though he says he did grow fond of Floyd Cramer’s “Last Date,” a “schmaltzy, instrumental piano, kind of swing jazz thing,” that exemplified his mother’s taste. Rather, MacKaye’s ears were sharpened by outside influences: A babysitter who introduced him to Jimi Hendrix; a woman living in a commune down the road from his childhood home who had James Gang and Jefferson Airplane records; and … [Read more...] about Ian MacKaye Talks ‘Woodstock’ Soundtrack Obsession in New Book Excerpt

Hank Azaria Says He’s OK Scrapping ‘The Simpsons’ Apu; Critics Tweet Thanks

· April 25, 2018 ·

Hank Azaria says he’s “willing and happy” to step aside as the voice of Apu on The Simpsons , or to help transition the character into “something new,” calling it “the right thing to do, to me.” Appearing on Stephen Colbert ’s Late Show , Azaria threw out the possibility of killing off Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, one of 20-30 regular characters he says he’s voiced on the long-running animated Fox series. He’d like to see an Indian-American writer added to the show, “genuinely informing whatever new direction this character make take, including how it is voice – or not voiced,” he said. Comedian Hari Kondabolu , whose truTV documentary The Problem with Apu trigged a lot of talk on the topic when it debuted last November, tweeted thanks to Azaria, then re-tweeted thanks of others: Related Story 'The Simpsons' Creator Matt Groening Says He "Didn't Have A Problem" With White Actors Voicing Non-White Characters Thank you, @HankAzaria . Blackberry Smoke Preview New ‘You Hear Georgia’ Album With Greasy Title Track

· February 24, 2021 ·

“You hear Georgia when I open my mouth/don’t make no difference what I’m talking about,” Charlie Starr sings in the very first line of Blackberry Smoke ’s new song “You Hear Georgia,” laying bare the focus of the group’s new album — an ode to their home state also titled You Hear Georgia . Due May 28th, the LP teams the rock, country, and all-around Southern band with producer Dave Cobb, a fellow Georgian and the curator of RCA Studio A in Nashville, where You Hear Georgia was recorded live. The song arrives with an in-the-studio video that captures Blackberry Smoke with its expanded lineup: guitarist Benji Shanks and backing vocalists the Black Bettys. The album also includes guest turns by Jamey Johnson (on “Lonesome for a Livin'”) and Warren Haynes (on “All Rise Again”), as well as a Starr co-write with Rickey Medlocke, of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Blackfoot fame. The song “You Hear Georgia” is both a celebration of the Peach State and a warning to those who might underestimate … [Read more...] about Blackberry Smoke Preview New ‘You Hear Georgia’ Album With Greasy Title Track

Janhvi Kapoor Talks Headlining ‘Roohi’, Bollywood’s First Major Release Since Indian Cinemas Returned To Full Capacity: Q&A

· February 24, 2021 ·

EXCLUSIVE: For Janhvi Kapoor , playing the lead role in the first major Bollywood film to hit Indian cinemas since they returned to full capacity earlier this month is a nerve-wracking responsibility. The movie, the horror comedy Roohi , has pressure on its shoulders to paint a rosy picture of the Indian box office market when it releases March 11, particularly while the wider country continues to make a remarkable recovery from the pandemic. This kind of genre cinema has not historically been a big deal in India , but it is gaining traction, as evidenced by the buzzy reception to 2018 pic Stree , which was made by Roohi producer Dinesh Vijan. In the new film, Kapoor plays a woman possessed by a witch who can only be cured by marriage. As you might have guessed, it promises to have a cultural point to make, which the actress discusses below in an exclusive first chat with Deadline ahead of the release.
