Tamron Hall has left NBC News , after becoming the most high-profile flotsam and jetsam of the division’s hire of Megyn Kelly — who is getting, among other things, the third hour of Today that Hall co-hosted. It was the Hall talks that led NBC News to inform Today staff of its Kelly-related 9 AM shakeup. Hall had to be told last week, because her contract was coming up and her reps were in talks with the news division. Last week, a source reported that the news division hoped she would stick around, continuing to appear on Today ‘s mothership 7-9 AM show and hosting MSNBC Live with Tamron Hall. Though Hall has exited, Al Roker will continue to host at 9 AM until Kelly joins the lineup in the fall. RS Country Music Picks for Week of March 8th
Whether it’s coming out of Nashville, New York, L.A., or points in between, there’s no shortage of fresh tunes, especially from artists who have yet to become household names. Rolling Stone Country selects some of the best new music releases from country and Americana artists. (Check out last week’s best songs.) Shonna Tucker, “A Brother’s Love” This country-soul lullaby from Alabama singer-songwriter-bassist Shonna Tucker is a touching ode to fraternal companionship and the type of trust that turns close friends into family. “I ain’t your mama,” Tucker, a former member of Drive-By Truckers, sings over her gently plucked mandolin, “but I feel like I am.” The song was recorded remotely with Oklahoma singer-songwriter John Calvin Abney, but it plays like a warm dialogue between two close-knit cousins. Int’l Critics Line: Anna Smith On Chile’s Oscar-Shortlisted ‘The Mole Agent’
An 83-year-old man goes undercover in a nursing home in The Mole Agent , Chilean director Maite Alberdi ’s Oscar hopeful that’s been shortlisted for both International Feature and Documentary. While it’s filmed and scored in the style of a playful spy movie, it’s most remarkable in its quieter moments, as the true heart of the story emerges. The Mole Agent is shot through Sergio’s spy glasses, more comes from the professional crew ostensibly filming a straightforward doc about the care home — as far as we know, no staff or residents know Sergio’s real reason for spending three months there. Like many a good cover story, his is credible because it’s rooted in reality. He’s grieving his wife, and much as he loves his grown-up children, he could use new company and a change of scene. The Mole Agent is a particularly compelling piece of cinema.
