Seven years ago, Rolling Stone interviewed Real World co-creator Jonathan Murray about the newest season of the groundbreaking MTV reality show. At the end, we ran an idea past him: “[Thinking] back to that original cast in New York, it would be nice to see something with them again. Maybe put them all back into a loft for a week.” He was a little skeptical. “I don’t know doing it that way is best, and I’m not sure they’d be willing to do it,” he said at the time. “I’m not sure the current audience on MTV is interested in seeing a reunion of those people.” He was right that the current MTV audience likely has little interest in seeing a bunch of middle-aged people move back into a New York City loft they called home nearly three decades ago. But CBS All Access, which is rebranding as Paramount+ , is built around nostalgic revivals like Star Trek: Picard, The Twilight Zone , and the upcoming Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years. With The Real World coming up on that … [Read more...] about ‘The Real World’ Co-Creator Jonathan Murray on the New York ‘Homecoming’

Backup Singer Dolette McDonald on Her Years With Talking Heads, the Police, and Don Henley
Rolling Stone interview series Unknown Legends features long-form conversations between senior writer Andy Greene and veteran musicians who have toured and recorded alongside icons for years, if not decades. One wonders what Notorious B.I.G would have thought about smartphones. The late New York MC, who is the subject of a new Netflix documentary titled Biggie: I Got a Story to Tell, was an eager evangelist of the humble camcorder. Early on in the documentary, his longtime friend Damion “D-Roc” Butler explains how Biggie instructed him to capture the audiences at their concerts. The resulting footage is electric — a preserved vision of a hip-hop golden era, shown from the vantage point of one of its most culturally influential stars. By now, grainy archival footage is a hallmark of the growing genre of music documentary, but here it serves a more imperative function. The flattened narrative of East Coast versus West Coast rap has served, mostly, to obscure the man Biggie was. Throughout … [Read more...] about ‘Biggie: I Got a Story to Tell’ Avoids the Trap of Mythology
