Cockrell’s appearance on The Tonight Show came after a surreal series of events that started when Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon happened to hear “Swingin’” in a hardware store and was instantly mesmerized. The song was from Cockrell’s 2020 album, If in Case You Feel the Same, which had arrived last summer, but failed to make a big splash. At the beginning of 2021, after nearly two decades as a musician, Cockrell told his management that he was going to start looking for another job, at which point they informed him that Fallon had fallen in love with the song and booked him for Tonight. … [Read more...] about Thad Cockrell Makes ‘Tonight Show’ Debut, Performs ‘Swingin” With the Roots

Reflections on the Muslim Ban on the Four-Year Anniversary
Did you see protesters when you were released?I got out to an empty airport because I was one of the first people to be detained. My partner was there and a friend. It was like four in the morning. She had followed what was going on and she came with some food, she made some Sri Lankan curry and brought it. I was met by those two people, which was a wonderful way to exit. When I was in the car going back home, I immediately got on the phone with people that I’d been in touch with before, who were trying to figure out what was going on on the inside so they could help other people who were coming in and being detained. I hadn’t slept in like 48 hours. I maybe took a one hour nap, got back up and continued doing phone calls with lawyers, but then also doing a little bit of media work. And I remember when I saw footage of people at JFK, basically 24 hours later. People started coming to the airports. San Francisco, New York City. I saw this footage on the news of a family … [Read more...] about Reflections on the Muslim Ban on the Four-Year Anniversary
Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker Performs Sublime ‘Anything’ on ‘Colbert’
The clip finds Lenker performing outdoors, sun radiating in the background as she finger-picks her way through the track. On the studio version of “Anything,” Lenker’s playing is assisted by a paint brush, which adds a dreamy hush to the notes; but here, her barebones playing underpins the aching lyrics with a more tender edge: “I don’t wanna talk about anyone,” Lenker sings, “I don’t wanna talk about anyone/I wanna sleep in your car while you’rе driving/Lay in your lap when I’m crying.” … [Read more...] about Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker Performs Sublime ‘Anything’ on ‘Colbert’
Toh Baat Pakki Music Review
Toh Baat Pakki is a mixed bag with none of the songs being an assault on the ears but not all turning out to be so likeable that they would make this as the hot selling album of the season. 'Karle Mujhse Pyaar' brings in an urban contemporary feel but needs some solid promotion over next few weeks to make an impression. On the other hand 'Jis Din' is good though it does invoke a sense of deja vu. Don't look for anything extraordinary out of Toh Baat Pakki and you won't mind giving this score by Pritam a listening before he returns with something bigger and better in months to come. … [Read more...] about Toh Baat Pakki Music Review
Lahore music review
There is a new Daler Mehndi that one gets to hear in 'Musafir' which is a soft track. One wonders how composer M M Kreem thought of bringing Daler Mehndi out of his comfort zone of 'bhangra' numbers and made him to do this slow moving number about the journey of life. Yet another situational track which can primarily be expected to play for some time in the film's background score, 'Musafir' written by Panchhi Jalonvi has a pensive feel to it and doesn't have much shelf life beyond Lahore. However, M M Kreem thought otherwise and hence he repeats the song, this time by bringing himself behind the mike. … [Read more...] about Lahore music review
