The most memorable images of Joaquín “ El Chapo ” Guzmán paint him as an almost cartoonish figure: a stout, mustachioed man disappearing down a hole underneath the shower in his jail cell like a mole; a dirt-smeared fugitive being manhandled by military police as he’s marched into prison. But the cartel kingpin who had dominated the drug trafficking industry for the past two-and-a-half decades was a cunning, ruthless criminal, one who held positions in most wanted lists from the Chicago Crime Commission to Interpol. His submarines, airplanes and vast network of tunnels helped supply and fuel the vast majority of the American cocaine industry. He’s been accused of having his competition publicly slaughtered in the streets. And after his cinematic capture last year, the entertainment industry has jumped on the opportunity to paint El Chapo into our pop culture as our latest outlaw obsession du jour. How ‘Sound Of Metal’ Changed Everything For Riz Ahmed, Darius Marder & Paul Raci, Even Before It Earned Six Oscar Nominations
Darius Marder ’s Sound of Metal went into 2019’s Toronto International Film Festival without a distributor. Now, a year-and-a-half on, it’s a six-time Oscar nominee and perhaps the most hard-fought of all of this year’s crop of Best Picture candidates. Joe Utichi meets Marder and stars Riz Ahmed and Paul Raci to take stock of a film that transformed its key players in ways they hadn’t expected. They say Oscar loves a narrative, and they don’t come much more inspiring than Sound of Metal ’s. Even before he got his debut feature to set, Darius Marder spent more than a decade honing his tale about a heavy metal drummer and recovering addict who loses his hearing, butting up against the many hard realities of filmmaking that told him a movie like this could not work. As he did it, he learned more and more about deaf culture, and heard moving stories about people pursuing recovery in dedicated deaf sober houses. In Riz Ahmed, he found an actor willing to immerse so fully … [Read more...] about How ‘Sound Of Metal’ Changed Everything For Riz Ahmed, Darius Marder & Paul Raci, Even Before It Earned Six Oscar Nominations

Cannes Marché Nixes May Screenings Event, Moves It Instead To June 21-25
In a welcome move to avoid Cannes events in three separate months this summer, the Cannes Marché is scrapping its ‘pre-Cannes screenings’ in May in favor of a June 21-25 event. Given that most major sales companies are banding together to stage a virtual market at the end of June, this should now pave the way for most industry to carry out its Cannes-related business at the end of June. The Marché said today: “ Following the request from sales agents to have an event between the EFM and the Marché du Film in Cannes in July, the Marché du Film announced a few weeks ago the Pre-Cannes Screenings in May. More recently, some sales companies voiced their preference to hold the event later in June. We therefore decided to launch a wide survey to all buyers and sellers. More than 700 answered: a vast majority confirmed their participation in the Pre-Cannes Screenings and 66% voted in this new context for moving to 21 June. Listening to and answering the needs of … [Read more...] about Cannes Marché Nixes May Screenings Event, Moves It Instead To June 21-25
Top Sellers & Agencies Set End Of June Date For Their ‘Cannes Virtual Market’; Will Run Alongside Cannes Marché Pre-Screenings Event
EXCLUSIVE: In a smart move that aligns international film sales business closer to this year’s Cannes Film Festival, leading sellers and packaging agencies have agreed to stage their main summer pre-sales business as a virtual market between June 21-25, the same dates which the Cannes Marché today announced it is moving its “Cannes pre-screenings event.” The update comes as the industry still wonders if the festival will be able to follow through with its plans to hold both the Cannes Film Festival and a Cannes Market on the Croisette in July, with the global Covid pandemic lingering. As we reported two weeks ago , the loose alliance of dozens of leading sellers and the main agency packagers have been in discussions for weeks to figure out the best course to be able to carry out their virtual business on pre-sales packages.
