As the latest in a flood of atmospheric river events hit Souther California today, several local theme parks closed their gates. Magic Mountain shut down for the second time in as many months as winds associated with the current storm blasted a nearby peak with force equivalent to a Cat. 2 hurricane. Magic Mountain Truck Trail , a site on the peak for which the park is named, is often the windiest spot in and around Los Angeles . It lived up to that reputation overnight, clocking wind gusts early this morning has high as 102 mph. Further downslope in Saugus, where the the park is located, winds gusted to 57 mph. Walt Disney World Workers Picket Outside Park Facilities Flying LGBT Flags & Holding Signs Asking For A Raise
A large group of Walt Disney World workers and their allies looking to be in the hundreds marched outside park facilities earlier today chanting, “Walt Disney workers need a raise!” The event was dubbed the “Rally for a Raise” bu organizers. Many of the protesters come from a coalition of six unions representing close to 42,000 WDW cast members known as the Services Trades Council Union ( STCU ). The coalition and Disney have been negotiating a new contract since the old one expired last October 1. In November, the union asked for a minimum wage of $18 an hour in the first year of a new contract. Disney, for its part, has said it proposed “a path to $20 an hour for starting wages.” According to Orlando Sentinel reporter Katie Rice, Disney’s proposal was to raise the minimum wage $1 a year until it reaches $20, meaning three years hence. Union members reportedly rejected that proposal last month by a margin of 96%. LAUSD Strike: Public Schools To Close Tuesday As 60,000 L.A. Teachers & Campus Workers Stage Three-Day Walkout
Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Alberto Carvalho issued another plea today for the Service Employees International Union Local 99 to return to the bargaining table in hopes of averting a three-day strike set to begin Tuesday. “We should not be depriving our students of an opportunity to learn,” Carvalho said in a statement Monday morning. “With hours to go, I continue to appeal to union leadership to return to negotiations. We can find a solution that dignifies our workforce and avoids an unnecessary shutdown of schools while protecting the long-term viability of the school system.” The union, however, continued to dig in Monday, vowing to stick to its plans for a three-day walkout of roughly 30,000 service workers, including cafeteria workers, bus drivers, custodians, special education assistants and other workers. Punjabi Actor Aman Dhaliwal Injured In Hatchet & Knife Attack At Southern California Gym
A Punjabi and Bollywood actor is recovering from multiple stab wounds today after a man wielding a hatchet and knife attacked him outside a gym about an hour southeast of Los Angeles. Aman Dhaliwal was assaulted at about 9:20 a.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of a Planet Fitness by a man Corona police identified as Ronald Chand, 30, of Santa Ana. Both men ended up inside the gym, where Dhaliwal was held at knifepoint — verbally also threatening others in the room — before the victim fought back and subdued and detained the assailant with the help of bystanders. Sources tell Deadline that Washington is in final negotiations to co-star in Scott’s sequel to his Oscar Best Picture winner Gladiator for Paramount.
