Chris Solari Detroit Free Press Published 4:18 PM EDT Apr 29, 2019 EAST LANSING — Another NFL draft has come and gone, with two more Michigan State football players – Justin Layne and Khari Willis – extending the streak of having a player selected to 79 straight years for the Spartans. The 2020 draft should make it 80 in a row. Perhaps the bigger questions: How many, and is there a potential first-rounder? The Spartans have not had a player selected on the opening day of the draft since offensive tackle Jack Conklin left early and went No. 8 overall to Tennessee in 2016. Dave Birkett Detroit Free Press Published 12:24 PM EDT Apr 8, 2019 There’s lots of good pass rushers projected to go in the top half of this year’s draft, and naturally the Detroit Lions have been connected to several of those names. Whenever the Lions sniff around a quarterback, they make headlines, though you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who thinks they’ll actually take a signal caller in Round 1. Instead, it’s guys like Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson and LSU linebacker Devin White who’ve been popular mock-draft picks for the Lions, with cornerbacks Greedy Williams and DeAndre Baker even making cameos. We’re at the point in the buildup to the draft that the Lions have been linked to just about every reasonable name at every reasonable position, except maybe the one that fits them most. Kirkland Crawford Detroit Free Press Published 12:58 PM EST Jan 17, 2019 As we march closer to the Super Bowl, the focus for many other NFL fans has shifted to the 2019 NFL draft. On Thursday, the preeminent NFL draftnik has published a first-round mock. ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. has predicted each of the 32 picks scheduled for April 25 in Nashville, Tenn. The Detroit Lions have the eighth overall pick. According to Kiper, they should go with defense, namely LSU linebacker Devin White. "White is a fly-to-the-football linebacker with similar athletic traits as Detroit middle linebacker Jarrad Davis, who was taken in the first round in 2017. The two could form a stellar tandem, as both are three-down linebackers. White isn't a true pass-rusher, but he makes plays in the backfield," Kiper wrote. White, entering the NFL draft after his junior season, had 123 tackles, 62 solo, three sacks and three forced fumbles in 2018. Kiper has Michigan defensive lineman Rashan Gary going with … [Read more...] about NFL draft: Mel Kiper says Detroit Lions take LB Devin White
