Cannes Directors’ Fortnight has appointed former arthouse sales agent Julien Rejl as its new delegate general and tweaked its French name in a move to usher in a new era of inclusivity for the 60-year-old parallel sidebar. Rejl replaces outgoing Directors’ Fortnight head Paolo Moretti who took up the role in September 2018, succeeding Edouard Waintrop who oversaw the section from 2012-2018. France’s Directors’ Guild, or Société des Réalisateurs de Films (SRF), the body which oversees the sidebar, said his appointment had been voted on during a general assembly on June 25. “His absolute passion, which is communicative, constructive and pluralist is what arthouse filmmakers will need in the years to come,” it said in a statement. It added that the organisation had also voted to change its French name to La Quinzaine des Cinéastes, from its previous name of La Quinzaine des Réalisateurs at the meeting. This move makes its banner title more gender-inclusive because the … [Read more...] about Cannes Directors’ Fortnight Appoints New Delegate General, Changes Name In Bid To Be More Inclusive

Harvey And Bob Weinstein Re-Up At The Weinstein Co. For Three More Years
Harvey and Bob Weinstein have signed deals to re-up at the Weinstein Co. for another three years, despite lying about this to Deadline for the past several days. This was hardly a state secret; Bob Weinstein told Deadline that he and his brother were nearing re-up deals when they got COO David Glasser to change his mind about leaving, after he’d tendered his resignation to the board. By signing new contracts, the Weinsteins can put an end to that speculation and make clear their commitment to the company they launched a decade ago. Now, the big question is whether this means the board will free up the necessary infusion of money to spend on film and TV slates to move forward, and if this halts the exodus of staff and rumors of cash woes that has dogged the company in recent months. It might also revive discussions to sell off a TV production division that has hits and no debt, after a big sale to ITV fell apart. The prospect of that still seems viable at either ITV or Fremantle (or … [Read more...] about Harvey And Bob Weinstein Re-Up At The Weinstein Co. For Three More Years

Through a rep, Stallone today flatly denied the allegation. “This is a ridiculous, categorically false story,” said his spokesperson, Michelle Bega, today after the story broke in the Daily Mail . “No one was ever aware of this story until it was published today, including Mr. Stallone. At no time was Mr. Stallone ever contacted by any authorities or anyone else regarding this matter.” Police noted in their 1986 report, obtained by Deadline, that during their interview with the unnamed girl, she became upset numerous times, “crying and sobbing” as she recounted the incident. Asked if she wanted to press charges, the girl declined, saying she was too “humiliated and ashamed.” The teenager told police that the incident occurred in July 1986 at the Las Vegas Hilton, where … [Read more...] about Sylvester Stallone Accused Of 1986 Sexual Assault, Calls Allegations “Categorically False”
The Many Cancellations of Elvis Presley
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re probably well aware that Baz Luhrmann ’s flashy Elvis biopic was released this week. It’s been hard to ignore the film’s major marketing push over the past month: a long standing ovation at Cannes, TikTok-creator sponsored content, a Doja Cat soundtrack cut, and the campaign to make Carrie Diaries star Austin Butler into a Brad Pitt-style heartthrob. In the thick of the promotion, the marketing push has led to re-fascination with Elvis Presley himself. Public interest had notably waned in the past couple decades. In a Rolling Stone piece two years ago, the King’s estate had been cooking up many ideas on how to rebuild slipping revenue streams and spark public interest in the star once more. Much like Bohemian Rhapsody had done for energizing Gen Z Queen/Freddie Mercury stans, they were probably banking on Elvis doing the same for another historical rock figure. This week’s episode of Don’t Let This Flop points out … [Read more...] about The Many Cancellations of Elvis Presley

R Madhavan Clarifies His Panchang Remark On Mars Mission; Says ‘Very Ignorant Of Me’
It was ignorant on his part to say the 'panchang’, an ancient almanac based on planetary positions, was used by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to launch the Mars Orbiter Mission, actor R Madhavan said on Sunday in an effort to quell the online criticism against him. At a promotional event of his upcoming film Rocketry: The Nambi Effect in Chennai last week, Madhavan had said the 'panchang' has a celestial map of calculations on the positions of planets, how their gravitational forces act, its effects, the solar flares, etc. which was used while working towards inserting the Mars Orbiter Spacecraft into orbit in 2014. A video from the event went viral on social media over the weekend with many users calling out the actor, in response to which Madhavan tweeted: "I deserve this for calling the Almanac the 'Panchang' in tamil. Very ignorant of me. Though this cannot take away for the fact that what was achieved with just 2 engines by us in the Mars … [Read more...] about R Madhavan Clarifies His Panchang Remark On Mars Mission; Says ‘Very Ignorant Of Me’
