Calling an album Superache is about as subtle as slapping a “Feelings Ahead” sign on its cover, but Conan Gray reached the vanguard of twentysomething pop by always putting his emotions right up front. On his second album, the 23-year-old YouTuber turned pop star reveals himself to be an astute observer of the human condition, recounting everyday scenes and highlighting those split-second details in interactions that can make a warm rapport between two people transform into permafrost. Gray has a lithe voice that simultaneously possesses the intensity of Shawn Mendes and the sweetness of Carly Rae Jepsen, a potent combination that adds both anguish and romanticism to his music. Some of the most gripping songs on Superache find Gray almost dispassionately describing his own life’s ups and downs before lowering the boom. On the longing “Footnote,” Gray recounts moments when he and someone he’s close to were mistaken for a couple, his observations (“They think we’re a … [Read more...] about Conan Gray Has Many Many Feelings — And Manages Them Quite Impressively on ‘Superache’

Hear H.E.R. Cover Sly and the Family Stone Classic ‘Dance to the Music’
H.E.R. has dropped a lively cover of Sly and the Family Stone’s 1967 track “Dance to the Music.” The single appears on the upcoming soundtrack to Minions: The Rise of Gru. The song, produced by Jack Antonoff , sees H.E.R. singing the funk tune over a grooving melody led by bass, saxophones, and synths parts. “Dance to the Music” follows on the heels of “Turn Up the Sunshine,” a collaboration between Tame Impala and Diana Ross for the animated film’s forthcoming soundtrack, out July 1. That track was also produced by Antonoff, who wrote the song alongside Kevin Parker, Sam Dew, and Patrik Berger. “Turn Up the Sunshine” is one of the few original offerings from the album that finds an eclectic mix of artists tackling classic releases from John Lennon, the Carpenters, Nancy Sinatra, Sly and the Family Stone, Kool & the Gang, Santana, and more musicians. The soundtrack will feature appearances from the likes of Brockhampton, Caroline Polachek, Bleachers, Phoebe Bridgers, … [Read more...] about Hear H.E.R. ‘I Think We Opened Doors’: Las Ketchup Look Back on ‘The Ketchup Song’ at 20
Lola Muñoz has explained the meaning of the “The Ketchup Song” more times than she can count, but she’ll try once more: “The song,” says the singer — one of three sisters, alongside Lucía and Pilar, who make up the Spanish pop trio Las Ketchup — “is about Diego, not us.” Diego is the drunk, hip-hop-loving protagonist of the song, the oddball 2002 Las Ketchup track (originally titled “Aserejé”) that hit Number One in two dozen countries, anchored a four-times platinum album, and eventually spawned the biggest novelty dance craze since the Macarena. At the center of the song’s pre-YouTube-era virality was the trio’s choreographed dance, seen in the video, to its gibberish chorus (roughly: “ aserejé-ja-dejé …”). But what many English-speaking “Ketchup Song” fans may have never realized is that the chorus is itself a nonsensical mangling of the refrain from another classic record: “Rapper’s Delight,” the Sugarhill Gang’s pioneering 1979 hip-hop classic. “Diego likes … [Read more...] about ‘I Think We Opened Doors’: Las Ketchup Look Back on ‘The Ketchup Song’ at 20
Broadway’s ‘American Buffalo’ Will Require Audience Masking Until July 10 Closing
The Broadway revival of American Buffalo , performed at the in-the-round Circle in the Square Theatre, will continue to require audience masking through July 10, the production’s closing date. In a statement released today, producers said, “Due to the close proximity of the audience to the actors as a result of the intimate size of the theater and the staging in the round, the production will continue to mandate audiences to wear masks in this space, despite the recent industry announcement of masking-optional across other Broadway theaters beginning July 1st.” Earlier this week, the Broadway League, the trade organization representing theater owners and producers, announced that the mandatory audience mask requirement that’s been in place since theaters reopened last fall will be replaced in July with a mask optional plan. The policy will then be reviewed on a month-by-month basis. American Buffalo is the first production to announce that it would maintain … [Read more...] about Broadway’s ‘American Buffalo’ Will Require Audience Masking Until July 10 Closing

Greg Laemmle Wants More Reviews Of Indie Films To Speed Arthouse Revival – Specialty Preview
A24 is going animated whimsical with Marcel the Shell With Shoes On , Neon opens Beba , Cohen Media Group presents Apples , IFC Midnight Flux Gourmet and Abramorama a documentary The Human Trial in limited release at arthouse cinemas. These venues have been doing a bit better, slowly luring Covid-spooked key older demos back into the theater-going habit, attracting some younger viewers (and playing big franchise movies because they have to). Greg Laemmle , CEO of Laemmle Theatres, understands recovery takes time, especially with independent distributors spending less on marketing. That’s why he counts more than ever on reviews to attract an audience. “Our theatres have been open for over a year since the 13-month shutdown, and every week we present an array of smaller foreign-language films, documentaries, and indie features. Distributors aren’t advertising in print like they did pre-pandemic. But if you look in the LA Times every day, you’ll … [Read more...] about Greg Laemmle Wants More Reviews Of Indie Films To Speed Arthouse Revival – Specialty Preview

Same-Sex Marriage and Contraception Should Be Next on Chopping Block: Clarence Thomas
In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court stripped American women of their right to reproductive autonomy . In a 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court on Friday determined that states can restrict or outright ban abortion at any point during a pregnancy. The decision overturned Roe v. Wade , a 1973 case that established a constitutional right to abortion services. In a concurring opinion, conservative Justice Clarence Thomas indicated that the Supreme Court should reconsider previous rulings that established the right to contraception, same-sex marriage, and protections for same-sex relationships. In a solo concurring opinion, Thomas says the court should reconsider rulings that protect contraception, same-sex relationships, and same-sex marriage. pic.twitter.com/zcQNko6NVR — Matt Ford (@fordm) June 24, 2022 “We should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergfell,” Thomas wrote. … [Read more...] about Same-Sex Marriage and Contraception Should Be Next on Chopping Block: Clarence Thomas
Brian Laundrie Claims Killing Gabby Petito Was ‘Merciful’ in Notebook Confession
Brian Laundrie wanted people to believe that he killed Gabby Petito because she was badly injured. The contents of his notebook, which authorities found near his remains in a Florida swamp last October — and which the FBI announced in January included a confession — have been shared by the Laundrie family attorney, according to NBC News New York . The photos show a multi-page suicide note, still legible after being underwater for several weeks. In what reads like a romanticized fantasy of a mercy killing, Laundrie explains that he and Petito had been rushing back to their van on a Wyoming campground as darkness set in, when Petito fell while crossing a stream. “I hear a splash and a scream,” Laundrie wrote. “I found her breathing heavily, gasping my name.” He carried her as far as he could, then built a fire and spooned her to try to warm her up, he claimed. “She was so thin, had already been freezing too long,” he wrote. He said she had a head injury and was … [Read more...] about Brian Laundrie Claims Killing Gabby Petito Was ‘Merciful’ in Notebook Confession
