After two years on hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, VidCon — the annual convention for fans, creators, and online platform industry types — returned to the Anaheim Convention Center last week. But it looked a little different than usual. For starters, the ear-piercing shrieks of fans lining up to meet their favorite creators were just a little quieter. With 50,000 attendees as opposed to 2019’s 75,000, the convention was somewhat smaller than it previously had been. Further, unlike VidCons of years past, some attendees were wearing masks, albeit an infinitesimally small number among the hordes of preteens angling for photo ops with their favorite creators (days later, several attendees of VidCon, which required proof of vaccination or a recent Covid test for entry, began reporting on social media that they had tested positive for COVID after the event). Perhaps most importantly, however, TikTok , the short-form video platform that dominated the app store starting in … [Read more...] about VidCon 2022 Was a Candy-Colored, Covid-Spreading, Content-Creating Extravaganza

Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith Answers Your Twitter Questions
Although Red Hot Chili Peppers member Chad Smith and his doppelgänger Will Ferrell may have spent much of 2014 trying to prove how different they are from one another, with their hilarious competition on The Tonight Show , the drummer does have something in common with the actor: he’s very funny. As Rolling Stone read the drummer the questions fans sent in via Twitter, he cracked wise about everything from the Chili Peppers’ penchant for wearing socks on their private parts to how Ferrell “robbed” him of the Golden Cowbell during his drum-off with the actor this year. Over the past quarter century, Smith has played with the Chili Peppers, the supergroup Chickenfoot and various sessions with the likes of Kid Rock, the Dixie Chicks and Johnny Cash. And, with an eye toward helping other musicians, he has also spent time lobbying for music education in Washington, D.C. – including a recent trip to the White House – and building a drum community with his Chad Smith Drum … [Read more...] about Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith Answers Your Twitter Questions
Danger Mouse’s Cool Midlife Crisis: Inside Broken Bells’ ‘Disco’
Danger Mouse has become one of rock’s biggest producers in the past five years, working with A-list bands like the Black Keys and U2 – but he admits his personal life hasn’t been quite as successful. “I don’t have a relationship, so I’m kind of all over the place,” says the 36-year-old, whose real name is Brian Burton. “When I meet younger people, I’m like, ‘Wait a minute, I’m not so young anymore. Is this the way it’s supposed to be?'” See Where Danger Mouse’s The Grey Album Lands on the 100 Best Albums of the 2000s Burton’s angst helped inspire After the Disco (out January 14th) – the second LP by Broken Bells , his collaboration with James Mercer of Oregon indie kings the Shins , who are on break. “He can be pretty dark in his musings about life, being single, all that stuff,” says Mercer, who crashed at Burton’s place in Los Angeles while they were making the record, often staying up late to drink and talk. “Whereas I’ve left a lot of that behind. I’m kind of … [Read more...] about Danger Mouse’s Cool Midlife Crisis: Inside Broken Bells’ ‘Disco’
‘The Exact Same Thing’: Oliver Tree Accuses the Kid Laroi Director of Copying His Videos
Messages from close friends and industry folks alike flooded Oliver Tree ’s phone after the Kid Laroi released the cinematically eccentric video for “ Thousand Miles ” in late April. Friends and colleagues wanted to know if Tree had helped direct the video, as snippets from it seemed to mirror his own work. The 28-year-old took a closer look and realized that some scenes were nearly identical to visuals he came up with for his own music. So, on April 28, Tree posted a TikTok showing side-by-side clips of his 2021 video for “Asshole” and Laroi’s recent work, accusing the visual’s director of cribbing. The visual similarities are hard to ignore: In each video, Laroi and Tree stick their heads out of a vehicle while driving, get hit by identical ambulances, and lie flattened on the ground — in exactly the same position — as a camera zooms in from above. “They steal that many shots and thought I wouldn’t notice?” Tree captioned the post. The video soon went viral on TikTok, … [Read more...] about ‘The Exact Same Thing’: Oliver Tree Accuses the Kid Laroi Director of Copying His Videos
Bison Attacks Man and His Family At Yellowstone National Park
Rob Goodell A scary moment for a man and his family, when an angry bison charged the group, goring one person and sending them to the hospital. It all went down on Monday, the 34-year-old man and his family were walking on a boardwalk near the animal at Yellowstone National Park. Apparently, the trio got a little too close for comfort to the bison, who charged them ... knocking the man and a child to the ground. Officials say the man was gored, suffering injuries to his arm and sending him to the hospital for treatment. Park reps say this is the second time this year a visitor got too close to a bison and was not only gored, but also tossed 10 ft into the air. … [Read more...] about Bison Attacks Man and His Family At Yellowstone National Park

Russell Westbrook Celebrates $47 Mil Lakers Payday With Kevin Hart At L.A. Hotspot
BACKGRID Russell Westbrook had the best Tuesday EVER -- because after he scored a $47 MILLION payday from the Lakers ... he celebrated with Kevin Hart at an L.A. hotspot!! Russ opted into the final year of his Lakers contract early Tuesday morning -- making him richer than ever -- and hours later, he, Hart and some other buddies grabbed dinner at LAVO Ristorante, a swanky West Hollywood joint. The two were in great spirits -- laughing and dappin' each other up outside of the eatery ... and while Russ didn't say too much, it's pretty clear he's fired up to be staying in L.A. for at least another year. Of course, the 33-year-old's first year in Lakers purple and gold didn't go smoothly -- he was heckled daily over his play -- but he made it obvious with an impromptu Beyonce car karaoke sesh Tuesday morning that he's shaking all of that off in 2022-23. pic.twitter.com/y3V4P1GwS1 — Russell Westbrook (@russwest44) June 28, 2022 … [Read more...] about Russell Westbrook Celebrates $47 Mil Lakers Payday With Kevin Hart At L.A.
