WGA Writers Look Back At 2007-08 Strike For Lessons To Apply To Looming Negotiations: “They Call It Fog Of War For A Reason”
The WGA is gearing up for upcoming contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers, arguably its most important in over a decade. This has prompted a group of top writers to look back at the lessons learned from the 2007-08 writers’ strike to see what can be applied to this year’s talks. Angela Workman, writer of The Zookeeper’s Wife , Chap Taylor, consulting producer on The Blacklist, Holly Sorensen, creator of the Step Up TV series, Flint Wainess, consulting producer of The CW’s In The Dark, Mixed Signals writer Eric Tipton and Marc Guggenheim, co-creator and exec producer of Arrow and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow – all veterans of the 07-08 picket line – weighed into the issue ahead of the negotiations. “There’s a lot of confusion about what the 2007-08 strike did and did not accomplish, and a lot of discussion about what we might achieve in our upcoming negotiation,” writes Workman on the From The Trenches: Working … [Read more...] about WGA Writers Look Back At 2007-08 Strike For Lessons To Apply To Looming Negotiations: “They Call It Fog Of War For A Reason”
Historically, The WGA Is Overdue For A Strike, With Residuals Again A Key Issue Of Upcoming Talks
Disputes over residuals that flow from new revenue streams have been at the center of every major film and TV strike in Hollywood’s history. And as the WGA , SAG-AFTRA and the DGA all preparing for contract talks early in 2023 with the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers, residuals could again be the flashpoint for the first industry-wide strike in 15 years. With inflation at over 7% this year, raising minimum pay rates also is expected to be a major issue for all three guilds. The WGA West, for instance, saw significant declines in total earnings for film and TV writers in 2020 and 2021, in part due to smaller episode orders and ubiquitous mini writers rooms, so the usual 3% annual pay hikes may not cut it this time. The WGA’s current contract expires May 1, and the DGA and SAG-AFTRA contracts both expire June 30, and all three guilds have said they want more streaming residuals and higher minimum pay rates for their members. And though strike … [Read more...] about Historically, The WGA Is Overdue For A Strike, With Residuals Again A Key Issue Of Upcoming Talks

Sundance Review: Kitchen-Sink Whimsy In Charlotte Regan’s ‘Scrapper’
The cost of living crisis has hit the U.K. hard, but you wouldn’t guess from the trio of films screening in the official selection at Sundance. Rye Lane , in Premieres, is a goofy love story set in south London; Girl , in World Dramatic, is a tender parent-child drama set in Glasgow; and Scrapper , also in World Dramatic, is a curious mixture of the two. It deals with issues such as social care, single parenting, truancy, and grief, but director Charlotte Regan handles these matters with a candy-colored levity that can quite often be charming, in a whimsical, Wes Anderson way, but sometimes just plain baffling (there’s a reason why you don’t see talking spiders in a Ken Loach movie). It begins with a title card that reads “It takes a village to raise a child”, but the statement is immediately struck through and replaced with the words “I can raise myself, thank you.” This is our handwritten introduction to 12-year-old Georgie (Lola Campbell), who lives by herself on a … [Read more...] about Sundance Review: Kitchen-Sink Whimsy In Charlotte Regan’s ‘Scrapper’
Surfers tell us why Western Australia is the best place in the world to live like a retired rockstar
Heinrich Böll’s short story, ‘Anecdote Concerning the Lowering of Productivity’ might be one of the most famous tales of the internet era. Although it was originally published in 1963, its brevity and “gotcha” ending have made it the prime subject for IM and social media sharing. It’s so popular it’s one of those things that are so misattributed, misquoted, and modified that at a certain point nobody knows where it originally came from. All of you surely know it already. A smug tourist attempts to lecture a scruffily dressed fisherman about how to live his life and ends up receiving quite the lesson. The story is fantastic, definitively one of Böll’s best, but it has been shared so many times on grandma’s Facebook page and co-opted by so many wellness gurus that I can’t help cringing at it. Speaking to these surfers that have spent their lives pouring their blood, sweat, and tears to improve their local communities, the overused tale suddenly came back to me, and I must … [Read more...] about Surfers tell us why Western Australia is the best place in the world to live like a retired rockstar
Steph Curry Expected To Attend World Premiere Of Sundance Doc ‘Stephen Curry: Underrated,’ From Peter Nicks And Ryan Coogler
Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry is heading to Utah, not for a game against the Jazz but an event in an entirely different arena: the Sundance Film Festival. We’re told the future hall of famer intends to make the world premiere of Stephen Curry: Underrated on Monday night, January 23, the documentary about him directed by Peter Nicks and produced by Ryan Coogler , Nicks, Jenelle Lindsay, and Erick Payton. “The plan is for him to be there… The timing just kind of worked out,” Nicks tells Deadline. “You can never know 100 percent with someone like that… He’s probably going to have to dip out. He’s got practice the next day.” The film from A24 and Apple Originals documents the two-time league MVP who wasn’t expected to survive in the NBA, let alone set the record for the most 3-point buckets in a career. “Far below NBA standard in regard to explosiveness and athleticism. At 6’2”, he’s extremely small,” said a frosty scouting report for Curry. It’s … [Read more...] about Steph Curry Expected To Attend World Premiere Of Sundance Doc ‘Stephen Curry: Underrated,’ From Peter Nicks And Ryan Coogler
Age-Defying Red Hot Chili Peppers and Post Malone Impress in Auckland
As the sun set over Auckland on Saturday night, 40,000 revellers packed into Mt Smart Stadium to catch a glimpse of two of modern music’s most popular acts, and the night packed a punch that will be a lasting memory for those who made the most of it. Post Malone couldn’t have been a better fit to get the party started. Constantly joking with the crowd, he showcased an energy that matched the enthusiasm he has for his craft. Bouncing between his well-known hits, including “Stay”, “I Fall Apart”, “Rockstar” and “Circles”, he casually demanded attention, belting out his surprisingly deep lyrics with endearing ease. “Thank you guys so very f***ing much for hanging out with me tonight. This is so very fun. Cheers!” he exclaimed at one point, and everyone in the crowd had no reason not to believe him. As he punched through cigarettes while constantly being himself – this is a man renowned for his love of tobacco after all – he easily won the Auckland audience’s … [Read more...] about Age-Defying Red Hot Chili Peppers and Post Malone Impress in Auckland
Microbudget Horror ‘Skinamarink’ Creeps Onto 600+ Screens – Specialty Preview
Shudder and IFC Midnight are launching microbudget Skinamarink on a not-so-micro 629 screens, giving the viral horror pic a major push after a well-received premiere back at Fantasia-fest that just kept snowballing with strong reviews and social media love. “I was over the moon. For a horror filmmaker in Canada, [Fantasia] is like getting a Cannes screening,” says first-time filmmaker Kyle Edward Ball about the leadup to this weekend’s buzzy specialty opening. He shot the $15k feature at his parents’ home in Edmonton, Canada. In it, two children wake up in the middle of the night to find their father is missing and all the windows and doors in their home have vanished. “I’d had a nightmare when I was little. I was in my parents’ house, my parents were missing, and there was a monster. And lots of people have shared this exact same dream,” Ball tells Deadline. He should know. After film school and a stint selling video equipment, he launched a YouTube channel called Bitesized … [Read more...] about Microbudget Horror ‘Skinamarink’ Creeps Onto 600+ Screens – Specialty Preview
