The End Of Packaging Fees: The WGA’s Historic Campaign To Reshape Talent Agency Business Takes Full Effect Today – Q&A
The WGA ’s historic reshaping of the talent agency business will take full effect at the end of business today, after which agency packaging fees will no longer be permitted under the guild’s franchise agreement. “The agency campaign was founded on the simple truth that agents are our fiduciaries,” said WGA West president Meredith Stiehm, who was one of the named plaintiffs in the guild’s long-running anti-trust lawsuit against the “Big 3” talent agencies. “The interests and priorities of agencies and their writer clients must be aligned. Our campaign had three main goals: end the collection of packaging fees, put a halt to the conflict of interest of agency-owned studios, and for the agencies to share information, which the WGA uses to fight late pay and free work. Thanks to the resolve and unity of the membership, we’ve achieved those goals. Today, as we mark the beginning of the end of packaging fees, we move forward with our agency partners to improve writers’ compensation … [Read more...] about The End Of Packaging Fees: The WGA’s Historic Campaign To Reshape Talent Agency Business Takes Full Effect Today – Q&A

Hell’s Angels on Trial: Tales of Drugs & Death
Whispering Bill Pifer is dying. The cancer growing in his throat has now all but choked off his raspy voice. A lip reader stood beside him and interpreted his words to the courtroom. They came slow and measured, the damning silent words of a dying Hell’s Angel. “ I understand I would have complete immunity,” Pifer’s lips said. “I won’t testify without it. The time I have left, I want to spend on the street.” Sonny Barger, 33-year-old president of the Hell’s Angels, supposedly talked too much to Whispering Bill while they were both in the Alameda County Jail in Oakland, California. The cold-eyed Barger has a reputation as a braggart, and this time, according to police, something he and Whispering Bill talked about led them to the hilly grasslands near Ukiah in far northern California, where police found three bodies stuffed into abandoned wells on a 153-acre ranch owned by the Angels. Big Tom Shull, 24, and Charles Baker, 30, had both been strangled. Their bodies had been in the … [Read more...] about Hell’s Angels on Trial: Tales of Drugs & Death
USC And UCLA Reportedly Explore A Jump To Big Ten Conference In Latest Upheaval In College Sports
USC and UCLA are exploring a move from the Pac-12 Conference to the Big Ten Conference as early as 2024, according to multiple media reports. The jump would be the latest major disruption of the college sports landscape, which has been altered by players gaining rights to name, image and likeness (NIL) revenue and the rise of the five conferences in the top tier of the ultra-lucrative sport of football. While the realignment would apply to all sports, football controls the vast majority of the dollars flowing to schools from media rights. Both USC and UCLA have kept mum about their plans, but the move has been reported by numerous outlets as effectively a done deal. Bay Area News Group had the first report about the reworking of the conference. It would certainly decimate the West Coast’s Pac-12, which has struggled in recent years but historically has been one of the elite conferences in college sports. Without two large schools in the nation’s No. 2 media market, the … [Read more...] about USC And UCLA Reportedly Explore A Jump To Big Ten Conference In Latest Upheaval In College Sports

Peter Bart: Streamer And Agency Layoffs Leave Hollywood Feeling Extra Ruthless
“It was like a palace of pitching. There’s never been any place like it.” An agent friend was describing the sprawling and frenetic Netflix reception lobby, which was an almost weekly destination for him and clients. It was so packed with dealmakers that projects were often re-shaped and re-packaged even before the Netflix pitch took place. Given news of 450 layoffs at the streamer , the pitching palace has become a cathedral of calm. With Netflix likely to lose 2 million global subscribers this quarter, its present priority is to trim costs while building an ad-supported tier to generate fresh revenue. The behavior of Netflix employees has reflected this change. “I’m taking pitches for shows all morning, then checking out job possibilities in the afternoon,” reports one Netflix executive I’ve known for years. “If I hear one more person lecturing me about ‘resilience,’ I’ll deck him.” Inevitably, turbulence in the job market has stirred speculation about the … [Read more...] about Peter Bart: Streamer And Agency Layoffs Leave Hollywood Feeling Extra Ruthless
