AMC Entertainment announced it has closed a $600 million strategic investment from Silver Lake , a tech-oriented investment firm, and will use part of the proceeds to buy back Class B common shares owned by the Dalian Wanda Group. The deal will give Silver Lake, which has stakes in companies including Alibaba, Tesla and Endeavor, a seat on the board of the top exhibitor. AMC will also add a new independent director “with significant technology experience and knowledge, with support from Silver Lake,” the announcement said. The transaction signals a retreat from the U.S. movie theater business for the Chinese conglomerate Wanda, which took control of AMC in 2012 in a $2.6 billion deal. In June at CineEurope, AMC boss Adam Aron sought to quell rumors of a Wanda pullback, insisting that they had “not sold a single share in eight years,” though he conceded, “things are status quo until they are not.” Under the deal, senior unsecured convertible notes were issued … [Read more...] about AMC Entertainment Gets $600M Injection From Tech Investor Silver Lake, Sets Plan To Buy Back Some Wanda Shares

It was an night filled with duets — Meghan Trainor and John Legend, Britney Spears and Iggy Izalea, Nick Jonas and his high-tech video backdrop — but the 2015 Billboard Music Awards still hit an understated peak with Little Big Town ’s “Girl Crush,” performed with a little help from Faith Hill . The crush-able singer joined Little Big Town during the song’s second verse, briefly taking over lead vocals from Karen Fairchild before joining the rest of the group during the harmony-heavy chorus. For a song that’s already received a bit of backlash from country music’s more straight-laced patrons, with some claiming that “Girl Crush” skirts too close to lesbianism for comfort, adding another woman to the mix was a bold (and smart) move. Controversy hasn’t hurt Little Big Town so far — “Girl Crush” is the reigning Number One song on the country charts, after all — and Hill’s presence doubled as proof that country’s A-listers support the group’s freedom to push the envelope. Another … [Read more...] about Watch Faith Hill Join Little Big Town for Sultry ‘Girl Crush’

Alex Jones won't be spewing his conspiracy theories on Twitter, which is now the first social media platform to permanently ban the "InfoWars" host. Twitter announced Thursday it's suspending two accounts -- @realalexjones and @infowars. The ban also extends to Periscope. A spokesperson said videos and tweets Jones recently posted violated Twitter's abusive behavior policy ... plus, there had been previous violations. The final straw appears to stem from a tense confrontation Jones had Wednesday on Capitol Hill, where CEO Jack Dorsey and other tech execs were testifying to congress. In addition to his face-off with Sen. Marco Rubio ... Jones got in the face of CNN reporter Oliver Darcy, and likened him to "t he Hitler Youth." Jones livestreamed the confrontation on InfoWars. Wow, this video. Alex JONES calls RUBIO a "frat boy" and touches Rubio on the shoulder. Rubio tells Jones not to touch him and that he won't be arrested because I'll "take care of you … [Read more...] about Twitter Bans Alex Jones and ‘InfoWars’
With a record $96 million at the domestic boxoffice and $248 million worldwide, Warner Bros. Joker clearly triumphed in theaters this weekend, but how did it do with Oscar voters? In the kind of early-October release slot the studio has used successfully to launch such boxoffice and awards magnets as A Star Is Born, Argo and The Departed, to name a few, there clearly are hopes that this film can land a number of nominations come Oscar time. And that was only amplified when the Todd Phillips -directed film — controversial for the very dark places it goes and uncomfortable realities of today’s society it reflects — won the top award at the Venice Film Festival last month, recently a harbinger of good things at the Academy Awards. Last year’s winner Roma went on to 10 nominations and three Oscars , while the 2017 winner , The Shape of Water was the eventual Best Picture champ . So how did the Academy respond? Joker was shown to membership on … [Read more...] about ‘Joker’ Screens For Oscar Voters – Can It Be A Best Picture Contender?
Paramount Global CFO Naveen Chopra indicated streaming losses would total about $1.8 billion this year, higher than Wall Street expected, but stuck to the company’s target of peak DTC losses in 2023. The business lost $901 million in the first half of this year. Chopra anticipated the same in the second half given a choppy advertising market. Adjusted OIBDA — a measure of operating income — was a negative $445 million for the second quarter ended in June. “We just have to let it play out a bit and manage through some economic headwinds,” he said on a call following first-quarter earnings. Analysts sought but didn’t get any timeline for reaching breakeven/profitability after 2023. The stock was down a steep 4% earlier today with investors spooked overall by streaming spend and profit visibility across the sector. It’s regained ground, down just hair late morning. Chopra also reiterated the company’s $6 billion spending target though 2024 but stressed that’s content … [Read more...] about Paramount Global Predicts Streaming Loss Of $1.8 Billion In 2022, Defends Content Spending
This year’s Comic-Con in San Diego featured Steven Spielberg and the stars of the new Spider-Man and Twilight movies – but the most joyously received guest was Beavis and Butt-Head creator Mike Judge, who is bringing the duo back to MTV in October. We caught up with him after his panel, where he debuted the first new footage of the duo in 14 years . What led to Beavis and Butt-Head coming back to MTV? They’ve been talking about it for years, especially about making another movie. They’ve been wanting a sequel since the first one came out, but I was just doing other things. But over the years I’ve entertained the idea here and there. I’d occasionally even write down ideas, and I even had two or three ideas for another movie. This thing started with MTV coming to me recently and asking again if I wanted to bring the show back. King of the Hill was done. I’ve been working in animation for a while and been around the development process and people trying to come up with … [Read more...] about Exclusive: Mike Judge on the Return of ‘Beavis and Butt-Head’
