Jason Momoa has revealed he struggled to provide food for his young family after a short-lived appearance in HBO fantasy drama Game Of Thrones led to a bleak period of unemployment.
The actor became an instant hit with fans of the hugely popular show thanks to his portrayal of imposing Dothraki leader Khal Drogo during its first season.
But Momoa tells InStyle that he couldn’t provide for wife Lisa Bonet and their two children, Lola Iolani, now 13, and Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha, 11, after the character was killed off in 2011.

Think pink like Jason Momoa in a blazer by Dolce & Gabbana
We agree with Jason Momoa. Pink is the best!
He modelled designs by the likes of Tom Ford and Marrakshi Life in this photoshoot for InStyle, but of course it was this Dolce & Gabbana suit that really piqued our interest!
It’s by Dolce & Gabbana and features a tile print in a luxurious jacquard fabric. The burgundy lapels and pockets are a nice touch too.
Both the blazer and the matching trousers are available to buy now at Farfetch so click (right) if you’re tempted to copy.
Or take your pick from the pink blazers in our edit below, from the likes of Asos and Red Herring. Happy shopping!

He recalled: ’I mean, we were starving after Game of Thrones. I couldn’t get work. It’s very challenging when you have babies and you’re completely in debt.’
Based on author George RR Martin’s award winning series of novels, Game Of Thrones quickly developed a huge following during an eight season run, making household names of regular cast-members Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke.
However the show was still in its infancy when Momoa stepped in to play the leather-clad Drogo for 10 consecutive episodes, with the character’s violent screen death in line with Martin’s original text.
Old times: The actor became an instant hit with fans of the hugely popular show thanks to his portrayal of imposing Dothraki leader Khal Drogo during its first season
Family man: Momoa is married to Lisa Bonet, 52, and the couple share daughter Lola Iolani, 13, and son Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha, 11 (The family seen here with Jason’s mother Coni)
He would make a fleeting appearance in its second season – albeit in flashback – but as Game Of Thrones became a global hit Momoa was left behind and ultimately confronted with two-years of unemployment.
His next lead role would come in his own film, the little known Road to Paloma, which was written and directed by the star in 2014.
After starring in short-lived TV series The Red Road, his career was given a lifeline when he was cast as the lead in DC blockbuster Aquaman.
The DC superhero film grossed over $1.1billion at the worldwide box office, making him one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars and highlighting a remarkable change in fortune.
His own man: During his chat with InStyle, the Hawaiian star also spoke about his idiosyncratic style, including his fondness for one particular color
Bold choices: ‘Pink is just a beautiful color,’ said the actor of his affinity for pink scrunchies, while modeling a style from Invisibobble. ‘And I’m pretty secure in my masculinity. I don’t really give a s**t what anyone thinks’
The actor married Lisa – the ex-wife of rock star Lenny Kravitz – in 2017 following a 12-year relationship, during which they welcomed their two children.
And he maintains a close relationship with Zoë Kravitz, 31 – Lisa’s only child from her six-year marriage to Lenny – with whom he shares a matching tattoo.
Revealing the meaning behind their matching body art, he said: ‘Basically it means, “Always be drunken.”‘ You know, just intoxicated with life. Not necessarily drunk.’
Reflecting on his relationship with biological son Wolf – his youngest child with Lisa – the actor admitted he worked hard to develop a unique bond with the youngster.
‘I didn’t know what it takes to be a dad,’ he said. ’And I don’t want to just tell my son, “Because I said so.” I really want to connect, and I want him to be vulnerable and open.’
Cool stepdad: He also discussed his matching tattoo with stepdaughter Zoe Kravitz (the daughter of Bonet and her ex Lenny Kravitz
The look: Momoa draped himself in plenty of his favorite color for the photo shoot with InStyle
Away from film the Hawaiian star is renowned for his idiosyncratic style, including his fondness for one particular color.
‘Pink is just a beautiful color,’ he told InStyle, while posing for one image with a pink velvet ‘Sprunchie’ hair tie from Invisibobble. ‘And I’m pretty secure in my masculinity. I don’t really give a s**t what anyone thinks.’
The actor also spoke candidly about using therapy as means of relaxing after a long day on set.
He said: ‘I’m amping myself up all day long, and then my nervous system doesn’t know that I’m not lopping people’s heads off. For me to relax and sit still is next to impossible.’
Hungry no more: ‘I mean, we were starving after Game of Thrones,’ the See actor told InStyle
Momoa can next be seen in the rebooted sci-fi epic Dune – an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel – and he admitted he was stunned after seeing the first trailer.
‘It was ‘Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem,’ and I’m just like, “Oh my god. I can’t believe my name was with those names.” I feel like I’m still a kid, freaking out.’
‘It’s not alien versus alien – it’s about conflicts between human tribes,’ he adds. ‘And greed. It really hits home right now.’
