An influential committee of MPs today warned the UK’s legal system and security services have been ill-equipped to combat the threat of potential Russian interference in British democracy. A bombshell report into allegations of Russian meddling today said there is ‘credible’ evidence that Moscow did try to influence the result of the 2014 Scottish independence referendum. The Intelligence and Security Committee said it had not been provided with any evidence that the Kremlin had sought to influence the 2016 Brexit vote. But it blamed this on an apparent failure by the Government to conduct any formal investigation into such claims as the ISC demanded ministers do now launch an official probe into the EU referendum campaign. The committee said on Brexit that it ‘would be difficult, if not impossible, to prove’ the ‘actual impact’ of any Russian interference but that an investigation similar to the one held into the 2016 US presidential election should now take place to determine the extent of any potential interference.
