The Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum based at Mira Mar Air Station is accepting submissions for its annual “Marines in Flight” Art Contest. The competition is open to students in grades 6-12 from San Diego County and military dependents grades 6-12 from the Southwest District. The subject of all artwork should be U.S. Marine aircraft currently in use or historical USMC aircraft from 1913 to the present. Aircraft should be shown in flight. Artwork must be 11 inches x 14 inches. The contest allows students to express their creativity as they learn about aviation history and the men and women who designed, built, flew and maintained the aircraft. A committee of retired Marines representing the Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation and the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum will do the initial assessment of art. A committee of professional artists will rank the finalists based on knowledge of the theme, creativity and originality. Winning art will be displayed during the summer at the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum. Winners receive cash awards and everyone who submits artwork for the contest will be entered in a drawing to win an iPad Pro. All entries are due by 3 p.m. June 7. Entries can be hand delivered or sent by UPS or FedEx to the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum, 4203 Anderson Ave, San Diego, CA 92145-0316. If sending artwork by USPS, address it to Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation, PO 45316, San Diego, CA 92145-0316.
