Before Wednesday’s showdown with Hingham, Duxbury boys’ lacrosse coach Chris Sweet reminded his players to soak in the moment.
It’s a unique opportunity to play a rival, in front of a huge crowd at home, with a Patriot League championship and a No. 1 ranking on the line.
“That was the message to the boys, that it’s rare to have an in-season game with this kind of importance and intensity,” Sweet said. “Enjoy the moment and enjoy it for what it is.”
The advice hit home as the No. 2 Dragons (13-2) outlasted top-ranked Hingham (14-1), 9-7, earning their second statement win of the week.
Between its decisive 7-2 triumph over Lincoln-Sudbury on Saturday and this latest performance, Duxbury cemented its status as one of the favorites to capture a state title.
“That’s all you want as a senior,” said defenseman Malcolm Eddy. “You want this, and then you want the next step, to go to a state championship. That’s what we’re looking for now.”
The Harbormen burst out to an early 3-0 lead just five minutes in, prompting a quick Duxbury timeout.
“We came out a little too hyped up,” Sweet said. “Just relax and let’s get back to playing our game. It seemed to work.”
Duxbury ripped off five unanswered goals, highlighted by Matt Peters’ score off a feed from Charlie Gans. Brad Backlund and Joe Gooley added tallies late in the half, and Duxbury rolled into the intermission with a 7-5 lead.
The defensive unit of Eddy, George Rovegno, and Cole Biggins stepped up late, fending off a Hingham surge and guiding the Dragons to another signature win.
“They were great,” Peters said of the defense. “They were a big reason why we won.”
