We take a look at the meteoric rise to fame of this hilarious hunk… Who is Dwayne Johnson AKA The Rock? Dwayne Johnson is an American actor and semi-retired wrestler who also goes by the name of The Rock. He was born in California on May 2, 1972, but grew up in New Zealand, Hawaii and Pennsylvania. Dwayne was a college football player for the University of Miami, where he won a national championship on the 1991 Miami Hurricanes football team. He later played for the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League, but in 1995 was cut from the team. Dwayne then took on the name The Rock and became a wrestler. He gained mainstream fame in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) from 1996 as a major figure in the company’s Attitude Era. Dwayne comes from a long line of wrestlers. His dad was Rocky Johnson, a famous wrestler in the ’70s. Dwayne’s granddad Peter Maivia was also a wrestler known as the High Chief, and his grandmother Lia Maivia was a professional wrestling promoter.
