Every week, a slew of new music videos hits the web. Watching them at your desk is not time theft because you deserve it; think of it as a nice reward for surviving another work week. But what if you don’t have time to watch every video — maybe you have a deadline, a hungry pet, or other grown-up concerns. In consideration of your schedule, Lizzie and Kaitlyn bring you a series called One Video. Each week we’ll tell you “one video” you need to watch, why, and for how long.
This week’s video: “Drink About You” by Kate Nash
Let’s see. Hailee Steinfeld’s contribution to the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack is finally here: a very vanilla pop song about shouting, performed mostly in a whisper. Makes no sense! The video is beach and sheets. Sexy? Not really! It’s just kind of the vague idea of sexy, plus hot pink baked goods and some crazy BeDazzler work, which is exactly what I hope Fifty Shades Freed is like. Justin Timberlake’s “Man of the Woods” video is here, as is his new album Man of the Woods, as is my 80th birthday. I guess he really did buy a flannel shirt, which is something I’ll say to avoid saying anything I can get fired for. The Verge’s old pal Jamieson Cox reviewed the album over on Pitchfork and gave it a 3.8 (out of 10!). I almost choked to death on my Cinnamon Toast Crunch:
“[T]here’s no refuge from the lyrics, which in many places engender the same mix of emotions you’d confront upon walking in on your parents having sex. Timberlake never quite oozed virility — he topped out somewhere around ‘Hollister model breaking bad’ — but this aspect of his persona has aged particularly poorly.”
Hollister model breaking bad! Jamieson, I love and miss you.
Some other music videos I watched this week: P!nk, Django Django, Suzy, that Target commercial starring Maren Morris, another Paul Thomas Anderson thing with Haim. God, so boring. What have we done to deserve being so bored? Just like last week, my co-columnist Lizzie Plaugic is on vacation with her family in Florida, texting me only infrequently about skin care and nail piercing. She may never come back. The sun may never come out. Life is a slog. We were so excited to see the end of January that we forgot what comes after it.
Anyway, because we’re not yet as doomed as we could be, Kate Nash released a new song called “Drink About You” today.
Who is Kate Nash?
Kate Nash is a British singer-songwriter who appeared on the scene in 2007, during the height of the “twee” aesthetic, and she played into it even while turning it on its head. She writes songs that sound pretty but are often about being gross. Her 2010 album My Best Friend is You is one of the best manifestos of weird girlhood in existence, featuring the perfect song “Don’t You Want To Share The Guilt?” which is about eating barbecue with an ex-lover and helping them put on a Band-Aid. She eschewed the label system by crowdfunding her 2013 album Girl Talk, which has songs about insomnia, the modern classic exploitation film Death Proof, and being called a bitch.
She’s also part of the cast of Netflix’s GLOW, the ‘80s wrestling melodrama that saved us from ourselves this summer. This song is from her upcoming album Yesterday Was Forever, which she has described as her “teenage diary” album.
What’s special about “Drink About You” by Kate Nash:
What’s special is that our best friend is back. She is running around the woods with two clones of herself, singing about romantic obsession. Following in the footsteps of fellow angst-pop genius girls Tove Styrke and Lorde, she performs this tribute to being uncareful with your own heart while dolled up in a bizarro wedding dress.
What’s special is “It’s only love but I think I taste blood.”
What’s special is that Kate has gone into the woods and come out with something far better than what J****n came out with.
The “Drink About You” video was directed by Liz Nistico, best known as one half of the indie-pop duo Holychild and for her “dear diary” column for V magazine. Once, in her column, she said, “I like writing letters to a lover who’ s forgotten me[.] I like feeling worthless and insignificant, then so powerful and perfect.” It’s special that these two are friends. I love them.
How long everyone should watch “Drink About You” by Kate Nash:
All of it, and please watch the other Kate Nash video that involves a wedding dress: the 2010 Halloween party-themed clip for “Later On.”
