Chevrolet has just released preliminary specifications for the 2017 Bolt EV, a small electric hatchback that promises a range of 200 miles or more on a single charge. We sampled Chevy’s dedicated EV when we drove the Bolt at CES, and now we have more technical details.
The Bolt is powered by a single electric motor backed by a 60-kWh lithium-ion battery with 288 cells, five sections, 10 modules, and 96 cell groups arranged in three cells per group. In total, the battery system weighs 960 pounds and is laid flat to maximize interior space. The Bolt’s electric motor is expected to produce 200 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque and is paired to a single-speed transmission with a final drive ratio of 7.05:1. Chevrolet expects the Bolt to be able to do 0-60 in 7 seconds or less and has a top speed of 91 mph.
Charging the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV can be done via a 120V, 240V, or a SAE Combo DC Fast Charger. A 7.2-kW onboard charger for regular overnight charging from a 240V wall box is standard equipment. Using the fast charger allows the car to be charged back to 90 miles in 30 minutes while the 240V charger will add 50 miles back in two hours or less. Should you need to squeeze extra range out of the car, the Bolt’s regenerative braking can recharge the car slowly when it’s in Low mode or when you use the regen on-demand paddles on the steering wheel.
The 2017 Bolt EV’s chassis features an independent MacPherson front and torsion beam rear suspension setup. Since the car rides on a platform dedicated specifically to EVs, the battery pack’s low placement contributes to its torsional stiffness. In terms of size, the Bolt is technically a tall hatchback at 164 inches long, 69.5 inches wide, and 62.8 inches tall. The car’s overall curb weight is 3,580 pounds, with most of it being low to the ground because of the battery pack’s flat shape and placement under the floor.
