Unlike any mayoral hopeful before him, Bill de Blasio put his kids front and center in television ads to shape his image and tout his message, making his campaign a family affair. Their star turns transformed Dante and Chiara de Blasio into bona fide celebrities. “We’ve never had a family like this in Gracie Mansion and in the modern media age,” said veteran political consultant Hank Sheinkopf. Dante, 16, is a junior at Brooklyn Tech, one of the city’s elite public high schools. Chiara, 18, is a sophomore at a private liberal arts college in northern California. With a few notable exceptions, such as when Fiorello LaGuardia took his kids to vote on Election Day, or when Rudy Giuliani let his young son Andrew share the stage with him during his 1994 inauguration, mayoral children have historically been shielded from the press.
